IBPS Clerk Negative Marking (+1 / −0.25)

IBPS deducts one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question for each wrong answer. In Clerk Prelims every question is worth 1 mark, so a wrong answer costs 0.25.

In the revised Mains the marks differ by test (for example Reasoning 1.5 per question and GA 1.25), so the penalty also differs: 0.375 for a wrong Reasoning answer and 0.3125 for a wrong GA answer. The Prelims mocks on this page use the +1 / −0.25 scale.

Worked example (Prelims marking)

60 right and 12 wrong: 60 × 1 − 12 × 0.25 = 57 marks. Leaving those 12 blank instead would have given 60.

How to use IBPS Clerk mocks to clear every sectional cut-off

IBPS Clerk Prelims is short and fast, and the sectional cut-off means a single weak section can end your attempt. Begin with one sectional test in each subject, timed at 20 minutes, and rank the three sections by score. Your daily plan should give the most time to the lowest one until it is clearly safe.

Numerical Ability is usually the scoring section if your calculation speed is good: simplification and approximation can be 10-15 questions on their own. Use the mini mocks and simplification topic tests every day with a stopwatch, and learn squares up to 30, cubes up to 20 and common percentage-fraction conversions by heart.

In Reasoning, puzzles and seating carry the bulk of the marks. Practise two sets a day and work on recognising a set's type in the first 20 seconds. Inequality, syllogism and coding questions should take under 30 seconds each; they are the marks you collect first.

In English, reading comprehension, cloze and error detection come up in almost every shift. One passage a day and a 10-question vocabulary or error mini set keeps the section steady.

Two or three full mocks a week in the final month is enough if you analyse each one. Check that every section clears a safe margin, then work on the total. Use the memory-based papers close to the exam to see the current level, and keep up with banking awareness for the revised Mains, where General/Financial Awareness gives 50 marks in just 20 minutes.
