SSC CHSL Typing Test 2026: LDC/JSA Typing and DEO Skill Test Practice

Practise all three parts of the SSC CHSL 2026 skill test: the LDC/JSA typing test (35 wpm in 10 minutes), the DEO Part B test (8,000 key depressions per hour) and the DEO Part A test (15,000 KDPH). The tool checks your net speed and error % against what SSC applied in the latest CHSL result.

Rules checked against the official SSC notices on 24 October 2026.

  • Scribe-eligible candidates get 5 extra minutes: 20 minutes for DEO, 15 minutes for LDC/JSA.

CHSL typing speed converter: wpm, KDPH and key depressions

SSC counts 5 key depressions as one word, so wpm × 300 = key depressions per hour. Use this table to turn your practice speed into what the CHSL test asks for.

Speed alone is not enough: errors must also be within the limit for your category.

How to prepare for the CHSL typing and DEO test

  • LDC/JSA: aim for 40 net wpm in practice so that nerves on the day still leave you above 35. Ten-minute tests are short; a slow first minute is hard to recover, so warm up with the 2-minute timer first.
  • DEO Part B: 8,000 KDPH is about 27 wpm net, so accuracy decides it: the limit for UR was 5% in the latest result, about 17 mistakes in a 350-word passage.
  • DEO Part A: 15,000 KDPH is 50 wpm net for 15 minutes. Build stamina with full-length 15-minute tests and watch whether your speed graph drops after minute ten.
  • Practise with backspace off once a week. It shows your raw accuracy and stops the habit of deleting whole words.
  • Hindi medium: learn one layout well (InScript or Remington) and practise in a Unicode font, because SSC accepts Mangal only.

How SSC counts mistakes in the CHSL typing test

From SSC's revised guidelines for evaluation of Typing Test/DEST scripts (English/Hindi), which the CGL and CHSL notices both refer to:

Full mistakes (count 1 each)

  • Omission of a word or figure
  • Substitution of a wrong word or figure
  • Addition of a word or figure not in the passage
  • Spelling error: a letter added, missed, repeated or changed
  • Repetition of a word, e.g. "I shall shall be"
  • Incomplete (half-typed) word, for any reason

Half mistakes (count ½ each)

  • Spacing: "Ihope" or "I h ave"
  • Wrong capitalisation (not applied to Hindi scripts)
  • Punctuation mark missed, added or changed
  • Transposition: "I hope" typed as "hope I"
  • Paragraph started with spaces instead of the Tab key

The same guidelines tell candidates to type figures and years exactly as printed, use the Tab key to start every paragraph, leave one space after each punctuation mark, and not repeat the passage once it is finished (you may go back and correct mistakes within the time). Any irrelevant matter typed is a mistake.

CHSL formulas: net speed, KDPH and error %

Key depressions (KD)

Every key you press to put a character on screen, including the space bar and Enter, is one key depression. SSC treats 5 key depressions as one word.

1 word = 5 KD  ·  wpm = KDPH ÷ 300

Gross speed

All key depressions you typed, right or wrong, divided by the time.

Gross wpm = (KD typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Net speed and KDPH

Only the words typed exactly right count. The CHSL notice judges DEO speed "on the basis of the correct entry of words/key depressions" and LDC/JSA speed "on the accuracy of typing", so net KDPH is the figure to compare with 8,000, 15,000, 10,500 or 9,000.

Net KDPH = correct KD × 60 ÷ minutes

Error percentage

SSC's guidelines define the mistakes and the notices round errors to 2 decimals, but no notice prints the formula. This tool uses the form SSC applies in stenography transcription, on the part of the passage you reached.

Error % = (full + half ÷ 2) × 100 ÷ words covered

Worked example: in 10 minutes you type 1,900 key depressions and 1,780 of them are in correctly typed words, with 9 full and 6 half mistakes over 330 words. Gross speed = 1,900 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 38 wpm. Net KDPH = 1,780 × 6 = 10,680, which clears the CHSL 10,500 KDPH mark. Error % = (9 + 3) × 100 ÷ 330 = 3.64%, inside the 7% UR limit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SSC CHSL typing test in 2026?

It is Section-IV of Tier-II, held in Session-II on the same day. LDC/JSA candidates type a passage for 10 minutes at 35 words per minute in English or 30 wpm in Hindi (about 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour). DEO candidates take a 15-minute skill test at 15,000 or 8,000 key depressions per hour depending on the department (Para 13.9.13 of the notice).

SSC CHSL typing test kitne wpm ka hota hai?

LDC/JSA ke liye English me 35 wpm aur Hindi me 30 wpm, 10 minute ka test. DEO ke liye wpm nahi, KDPH dekha jaata hai: Part B me 8,000 KDPH (2,000-2,200 key depressions ka passage) aur Part A me 15,000 KDPH (3,700-4,000 key depressions), dono 15 minute ke.

CHSL typing test me kitni mistake allowed hai?

CHSL 2026 notice me limit nahi likhi hai; sirf itna likha hai ki errors 2 decimal tak calculate honge aur SSC guidelines se evaluation hoga. CHSL 2025 ke FRTA (17.08.2026) me LDC/JSA typing test ke liye UR 7% aur baaki sab categories 10% the; DEO Grade A skill test me UR 5% aur baaki 7%.

Which DEO posts need 15,000 KDPH (Part A)?

Part A applies to DEO/DEO Grade A posts in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission and the Ministry of Culture (the departments in Para 8.1, which also need 12th with Science and Mathematics). All other DEO posts take Part B at 8,000 KDPH.

Can I take the CHSL typing test in Hindi?

Yes, for LDC/JSA. You choose Hindi or English in the online application form and the choice cannot be changed later. Hindi typing needs 30 wpm (about 9,000 KDPH) and must be done in the Mangal font only; using any other font leads to non-qualification (Para 13.9.13.7). The DEO skill test passage is in English.

Is anyone exempt from the CHSL typing test?

No one is exempt from the DEO skill test. For the LDC/JSA typing test, PwBD candidates certified by a Civil Surgeon as permanently unable to type can be exempted (Para 13.9.13.7 vii); the exemption does not cover visually or hearing handicapped candidates. Scribe-eligible candidates get 5 extra minutes.

Do I need to finish the whole passage?

No. Speed is judged on correct key depressions in the time given. For LDC/JSA you need about 1,750 correct key depressions in 10 minutes; for DEO Part B about 2,000 in 15 minutes and for Part A about 3,750 in 15 minutes.

Does the typing test add to my CHSL marks?

No. Para 17.7 makes the CKT and the skill/typing test qualifying. Merit comes from Sections I and II of Tier-II.
