- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. In a hilly district where buses run only twice a day, a young teacher named Kiran noticed that many girls stopped coming to school after the eighth class. The nearest high school was eleven kilometres away, and the walk took almost three hours. Parents worried about their daughters walking alone on lonely roads, and many decided it was safer to keep them at home. Kiran spoke to the village council and suggested a simple idea: second-hand bicycles. She wrote to people in nearby towns, asking them to donate cycles they no longer used. Within two months, more than sixty bicycles arrived. Some needed new tyres and brakes, so a local mechanic offered to repair them free of cost on Sundays. The effect was visible within a year. Girls rode to school in groups, which made their parents feel safer. The journey that once took three hours now took less than forty minutes. Attendance at the high school rose sharply, and for the first time, five girls from the village passed the tenth class examination. Kiran says the bicycles did more than save time. The girls gained confidence and began to take part in sports and debates. Some now talk about becoming nurses, engineers and teachers. When asked about her success, Kiran simply says that the solution was already sitting unused in people's homes; all she did was bring it to the girls who needed it.
