SSC Hindi Typing Test 2026 (Mangal / Unicode): CHSL LDC/JSA Practice

SSC CHSL lets LDC/JSA candidates take the typing test in Hindi at 30 words per minute (about 9,000 key depressions per hour) in 10 minutes, typed in the Mangal font only. Type these original Hindi passages with your own InScript or Remington Unicode keyboard; the tool compares Unicode text, counts key depressions and marks full and half mistakes the SSC way.

Rules checked against the official SSC notices on 24 October 2026.

What the SSC CHSL 2026 notice says about Hindi typing

  • Medium: "The medium of Typing Test will be Hindi or English", chosen in the online application form; the choice is final (Para 13.9.13.7 i, ii).
  • Speed: 30 wpm for Hindi, which "correspond[s] to about 9000 key depressions per hour" (Para 13.9.13.7 iii).
  • Time: speed is judged on the accuracy of typing a given passage in 10 minutes; 15 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates (Para 13.9.13.7 iv, v).
  • Font: Hindi typists "will be required to type in Mangal Font only. The use of any other font by the candidate will lead to their non-qualification" (Para 13.9.13.7 viii).
  • DEO: the DEO skill test passage is printed in English (Para 13.9.13.6), so Hindi applies to LDC/JSA only.

How to type Hindi in Mangal (Unicode) on your computer

  1. Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Hindi. Under its options, add the keyboard Hindi Traditional (InScript). Switch with Windows key + Space.
  2. Remington (GAIL) users: install a Unicode Remington input tool. Whatever the layout, the output must be Unicode text, which Mangal displays.
  3. Check you are in Unicode: typed text should look correct in this page's typing box. If you see English letters or symbols instead of Devanagari, your keyboard is still on English or on a legacy (KrutiDev-style) setup that SSC does not accept.
  4. Practise the hard parts: half letters (्), nukta, chandrabindu (ँ) vs anusvara (ं) and the purna viram (।). Each wrong matra or missing halant makes the word a spelling error, a full mistake.

The passage here is shown in Mangal if your computer has it, otherwise in another Devanagari Unicode font; the letters are the same Unicode characters either way.

Hindi typing passages for SSC CHSL (8)

Original passages in formal Hindi on governance, environment, health, railways and education. At 30 wpm you need about 1,500 correct key depressions in 10 minutes; shorter passages are joined with the next one so you never run out of text.

Full and half mistakes in Hindi typing

From SSC's revised guidelines for evaluation of Typing Test/DEST scripts (English/Hindi), which the CGL and CHSL notices both refer to:

Full mistakes (count 1 each)

  • Omission of a word or figure
  • Substitution of a wrong word or figure
  • Addition of a word or figure not in the passage
  • Spelling error: a letter added, missed, repeated or changed
  • Repetition of a word, e.g. "I shall shall be"
  • Incomplete (half-typed) word, for any reason

Half mistakes (count ½ each)

  • Spacing: "Ihope" or "I h ave"
  • Wrong capitalisation (does not apply to Hindi scripts)
  • Punctuation mark missed, added or changed
  • Transposition: "I hope" typed as "hope I"
  • Paragraph started with spaces instead of the Tab key

The same guidelines tell candidates to type figures and years exactly as printed, use the Tab key to start every paragraph, leave one space after each punctuation mark, and not repeat the passage once it is finished (you may go back and correct mistakes within the time). Any irrelevant matter typed is a mistake.

Hindi typing formulas: key depressions, speed and error %

Key depressions (KD)

Every key you press to put a character on screen, including the space bar and Enter, is one key depression. For Hindi Unicode text this tool counts each Unicode character (a conjunct like क्ष is three: क, ् and ष), which is close to the keystrokes InScript needs.

1 word = 5 KD  ·  wpm = KDPH ÷ 300

Gross speed

All key depressions you typed, right or wrong, divided by the time.

Gross wpm = (KD typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Net speed and KDPH

Only the words typed exactly right count. The CHSL notice judges DEO speed "on the basis of the correct entry of words/key depressions" and LDC/JSA speed "on the accuracy of typing", so net KDPH is the figure to compare with 8,000, 15,000, 10,500 or 9,000.

Net KDPH = correct KD × 60 ÷ minutes

Error percentage

SSC's guidelines define the mistakes and the notices round errors to 2 decimals, but no notice prints the formula. This tool uses the form SSC applies in stenography transcription, on the part of the passage you reached.

Error % = (full + half ÷ 2) × 100 ÷ words covered

Worked example: in 10 minutes you type 1,900 key depressions and 1,780 of them are in correctly typed words, with 9 full and 6 half mistakes over 330 words. Gross speed = 1,900 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 38 wpm. Net KDPH = 1,780 × 6 = 10,680, which clears the CHSL 10,500 KDPH mark. Error % = (9 + 3) × 100 ÷ 330 = 3.64%, inside the 7% UR limit.

Frequently asked questions

SSC CHSL Hindi typing kitne wpm ki hoti hai?

CHSL 2026 notice (Para 13.9.13.7) ke anusaar Hindi medium me 30 words per minute chahiye, jo lagbhag 9,000 key depressions per hour ke barabar hai. Test 10 minute ka hota hai (scribe-eligible candidates ke liye 15 minute).

Kya SSC typing test me Kruti Dev font use kar sakte hain?

Nahi. Notice ke Para 13.9.13.7 (viii) me saaf likha hai ki Hindi medium choose karne wale candidates ko sirf Mangal font me type karna hoga; kisi aur font ka use karne par typing/skill test me non-qualification hogi. Mangal ek Unicode font hai, isliye yeh tool Unicode Hindi text check karta hai.

Can I change from English to Hindi typing after applying?

No. The medium (Hindi or English) is chosen in the online application form, and the notice says that choice is final; no change is allowed later.

Which keyboard layout should I use for Hindi typing?

The CHSL notice fixes the font (Mangal), not the keyboard layout. InScript is the standard Indian layout and is built into Windows as "Hindi Traditional"; Remington (GAIL) layouts need a separate Unicode input tool. Practise on one layout and check the instructions SSC issues before the test.

How many mistakes are allowed in the SSC Hindi typing test?

The CHSL 2026 notice does not print a limit. In the CHSL 2025 FRTA write-up (17.08.2026) SSC allowed 7% mistakes for UR and 10% for all other categories in the LDC/JSA typing test, without a separate figure for Hindi, so this tool uses the same limits.

Is capitalisation checked in Hindi typing?

No. SSC's evaluation guidelines say the wrong-capitalisation half mistake does not apply to Hindi typewriting scripts. Spelling (matra, halant, nukta), spacing and punctuation such as the purna viram (।) are still checked.

Is there a Hindi option in the SSC CGL DEST?

The CGL 2026 notice does not mention a Hindi option for the DEST; it describes a passage of about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes. The Hindi option is in the CHSL LDC/JSA typing test.

How does this tool count Hindi key depressions?

It counts each Unicode character you produce, including spaces, matras and the halant. That is close to the number of keystrokes InScript needs; Remington layouts can need more or fewer keystrokes for some conjuncts, so treat the KDPH as an estimate.
