- Directions: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Certain words are given in quotes to help you locate them. In a narrow lane of the old city, Iqbal Hussain had repaired clocks for over forty years. His shop was so small that customers had to stand outside while he worked, and its walls were covered with clocks left behind by owners who never returned for them. Iqbal did not mind. He said that a clock that kept time for nobody was still better than a clock that did not keep time at all. When his eyesight began to 'weaken', his son 'urged' him to close the shop. Repairs, the son argued, no longer paid; people simply threw away a broken watch and bought a new one. Iqbal agreed that fewer customers came, but he was not ready to give up the work. Instead, he put up a small notice saying that he was looking for someone to learn the trade. The only person who replied was Neha, a nineteen-year-old who had dropped out of an engineering course because she could not afford the fees. She had no experience with clocks, but she had spent her childhood taking apart radios and fans to see how they worked. Iqbal was doubtful at first. He had expected a quiet young man who would sit still for hours, and Neha asked more questions in a day than his customers had asked in a month. Gradually, however, he came to value her questions. She wanted to know not only how to fix a clock but why it had broken, and she began keeping notes on the faults she saw most often. Within a year she had noticed that many of the cheap wall clocks brought to the shop failed because of the same weak plastic gear. She started making replacement gears from brass, which lasted far longer, and word spread that the shop could fix clocks that others had declared beyond repair. Today Neha runs the shop, and Iqbal comes in every morning only to sit on his stool and drink tea. Business is better than it has been for years, partly because Neha also teaches weekend classes for children who want to understand how machines work. When people ask Iqbal whether he regrets not closing the shop, he points to the children bent over their tiny screwdrivers and says that some things are worth keeping even when they do not pay at first.
