SSC GD Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

SSC GD Negative Marking (+2 / −0.25)
SSC GD has the mildest penalty of the SSC exams: 2 marks for a correct answer and only 0.25 deducted for a wrong one. One wrong answer costs one-eighth of a right answer.
Because of that, even a pure guess among four options has a slightly positive expected value (¼ × 2 − ¾ × 0.25 ≈ +0.31 marks), and a guess after removing one wrong option is clearly worth taking. Our GD mocks score you on the same +2 / −0.25 scale.
Worked example (CBE marking)
60 right and 12 wrong: 60 × 2 − 12 × 0.25 = 117 marks. Leaving those 12 blank instead would have given 120.
How to use SSC GD mocks to score high in the CBE
SSC GD is a speed test at Class 10 level. With 80 questions in 60 minutes you have 45 seconds a question, and there are no sectional timers, so the order you attempt the parts in is your choice. Most toppers start with Reasoning and Maths, finish both in about 30-35 minutes, and then move to English or Hindi and General Knowledge.
Use the Maths and Reasoning sectional tests to get each 20-question part under 15 minutes. The GD maths list has no algebra, geometry or trigonometry, so the topic-wise tests on percentage, ratio, profit and loss, average, time and work and simplification cover almost everything that is asked.
General Knowledge is the least predictable part. Do one GK topic test every day (history, polity, geography, science), and add current affairs of the last six months. Unlike the other SSC exams, attempting nearly every GK question makes sense in GD, because the 0.25 penalty is small.
Take a full mock two or three times a week in the final month and note your total out of 160 with and without guesses. Because merit is drawn state-wise and category-wise, aim for a margin well above your category's last cut-off rather than just the qualifying mark.
Do not leave the physical test for later. The PET for men is 5 km in 24 minutes, an average of 12.5 km/h, and it needs weeks of build-up. Running in the morning and a full mock in the evening is a schedule many successful candidates follow.
