  • Each question carries 3 marks. Session I has no negative marking; Session II deducts 1 mark per wrong answer.
  • Session I is qualifying. Session II is evaluated only if you qualify Session I, and the MTS merit list is drawn on Session II scores.
  • Session I closes automatically after 45 minutes and Session II starts immediately (60 minutes per session for scribe-eligible candidates).
  • Havaldar (CBIC and CBN) candidates also take a PET (walking 1,600 m in 15 minutes for men, 1 km in 20 minutes for women) and PST.

SSC MTS Negative Marking (+3 / 0 (Session I), −1 (Session II))

SSC MTS is the one SSC exam where the marking changes inside the paper. Session I (Maths and Reasoning) has no negative marking at all, so you should answer every one of its 40 questions. Session II (General Awareness and English) deducts a full mark for each wrong answer against 3 for a right one.

That makes Session II the part where guessing really hurts: three wrong guesses cost as much as one correct answer earns. Our MTS mocks apply this split question by question, so the score you see matches the official scheme.

Worked example (Session II marking)

60 right and 12 wrong: 60 × 3 − 12 × 1 = 168 marks. Leaving those 12 blank instead would have given 180.

How to use SSC MTS mocks: clear Session I, score in Session II

Think of the MTS paper as two different exams. Session I only has to be qualified, and it has no negative marking, so the goal there is simple: attempt all 40 Maths and Reasoning questions inside 45 minutes and clear the qualifying mark comfortably. Practise this with the Maths and Reasoning sectional tests until you finish with time to spare.

Session II decides your rank, and it is where most of your preparation time should go. General Awareness covers social studies, general science and environmental studies up to Class 10, so the topic-wise GK tests on history, polity, geography and science are the most useful tests on this page for MTS.

In English, the questions are basic but the −1 penalty is heavy. Use the English sectional and mini tests to raise accuracy first; attempt only what you are sure of, and skip the rest. A Session II with 40 attempts at 95% accuracy beats 50 attempts at 75%.

Take a full mock once a week at first and twice a week in the last month. After each one, check your Session II score separately from the total, because that is the number that matters for the merit list. Re-attempt every wrong GA and English question a day later.

Havaldar aspirants should also start PET practice early: walking 1,600 metres in 15 minutes (men) or 1 km in 20 minutes (women) needs a steady pace that is easy to build with daily walks.
