  • 90 minutes (120 minutes for scribe-eligible PwBD candidates), with no sectional timer.
  • CBT 1 is for screening; normalised scores shortlist candidates for CBT 2 at 15 times the community-wise vacancies of each RRB.
  • The section split is "only indicative" and the actual paper can vary slightly. The same syllabus applies to the Graduate and Undergraduate CENs.

RRB NTPC Negative Marking (+1 / −1/3)

Every RRB NTPC question carries 1 mark, and 1/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer, so a blind guess among four options has an expected value of exactly zero (¼ × 1 − ¾ × ⅓ = 0).

Guess only when you can rule out at least one option; then the odds move in your favour. All NTPC mocks on this page use the official +1 / −1/3 scale and a single 90-minute timer.

Worked example (CBT marking)

60 right and 12 wrong: 60 × 1 − 12 × 0.3333333333333333 = 56 marks. Leaving those 12 blank instead would have given 60.

How to use RRB NTPC mocks: GK is 40% of CBT 1

General Awareness carries 40 of the 100 CBT 1 marks, more than Maths or Reasoning, and it is the fastest section to answer: you either know a fact or you do not. Make one GK topic test a daily habit (history, polity, geography, economy, art and culture, railway GK and current affairs), and review every wrong answer the same day. This is where NTPC ranks are usually decided.

Mathematics and Reasoning in NTPC are at Class 10 level and very repetitive across shifts: percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, number series, coding-decoding, analogy and syllogism. Use the topic-wise tests to make each of these automatic, then the 30-question Maths and Reasoning sectional tests to build a pace of about 50 seconds a question.

There is no sectional timer in the CBT, so practise an attempt order. Many candidates do GK first in 15-20 minutes, then Reasoning, then Maths, keeping 10 minutes to review marked questions. Use full mocks to find the order that gives you the best net score, then stick to it.

With 1/3 negative marking, blind guessing gains nothing on average. Track your accuracy in every mock and aim for 90% or more; it is better to attempt 80 questions correctly than 95 with ten mistakes.

Finish with the official previous year papers. They are actual RRB question papers with the official answer key, so they are the most accurate picture of the level and the type of GK RRB asks. Graduate candidates who clear CBT 1 should switch to the CBT 2 full mocks: the same subjects, but 120 questions in 90 minutes.
