RRB Group D Negative Marking (+1 / −1/3)

In the Group D CBT every question carries 1 mark and 1/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Three wrong answers wipe out one right answer, so a blind guess among four options gains nothing on average.

Eliminating even one option makes a guess worth taking. Because the cut-off is drawn Railway-wise and community-wise on normalised marks, accuracy matters more than attempts. Our Group D mocks use the official +1 / −1/3 scale.

Worked example (CBT marking)

60 right and 12 wrong: 60 × 1 − 12 × 0.3333333333333333 = 56 marks. Leaving those 12 blank instead would have given 60.

How to use RRB Group D mocks: Science and Reasoning first

Group D is the one railway exam where General Science is a full section: 25 questions of Class 10 physics, chemistry and biology. It is also the most scoring section for anyone who revises NCERT Class 9-10 science properly. Do one science topic test every day (electricity, light, acids and salts, carbon compounds, cell structure, human body) and revise the related notes after each one.

Reasoning has the most questions (30), and Group D reasoning is mostly direct: analogy, series, coding-decoding, direction, blood relation, syllogism and Venn diagrams. These are quick marks once the patterns are familiar, so use the topic-wise tests to bring each type down to 30-40 seconds.

Maths covers number system, percentage, ratio, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, mensuration and basic algebra and geometry. Practise them topic-wise first, then take the sectional tests on a timer.

In the last six weeks, take two or three full mocks a week. There is no sectional timer in the CBT, so practise an order: many candidates start with Science or Reasoning, then GA, and keep Maths for the end. With 1/3 negative marking, aim for 90%+ accuracy rather than attempting every question.

Run three times a week alongside your mocks. The PET (1,000 m in 4 min 15 s for men, 5 min 40 s for women, plus weight carrying) is qualifying, and many candidates who clear the CBT lose out there for lack of practice.
