- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. The village of Nandpur had a problem every summer: the only pond dried up by April, and women had to walk several kilometres to fetch water. For years, people accepted this as their fate. Then a group of young men and women who had studied in the city returned to the village with an idea. They suggested that the village should dig small pits and trenches on the slopes above the pond so that rainwater would soak into the ground instead of running away. At first, the elders were doubtful. Digging would take weeks, and no one was sure it would work. But the young people offered to do most of the work themselves, and slowly others joined in. When the monsoon came, the trenches filled with water, and the pond stayed full much longer than before. The next summer, for the first time anyone could remember, the pond still had water in May. Wells in the village also showed higher water levels. Today, Nandpur is held up as an example by the district administration. Officials bring visitors to see the trenches, and nearby villages have begun similar work. The young people say their biggest success was not the water itself, but getting the whole village to work together.
