When Kavita returned to her village of Daulatpur after finishing college in the city, she noticed that the only books in most homes were old school textbooks. Children who had learnt to read in the government school had little to practise on once the exams were over, and many of them slowly lost the habit. Kavita, who had spent her own childhood borrowing comics from a cousin, felt that something small could be done. She did not have money for a building, so she asked the owner of the tea stall near the bus stop whether she could keep a wooden shelf beside his bench. He agreed, partly because he hoped the shelf would bring him more customers. Kavita filled it with forty books she had collected from friends and relatives, and pinned a note above it: 'Take one, bring it back, tell someone about it.' For the first two weeks, hardly anyone touched the shelf. People looked at it with 'curiosity' but seemed afraid that they would be asked to pay. Kavita then began to sit at the stall every evening and read stories aloud to whoever was waiting for the bus. Within a month, a small crowd of children gathered each day before she arrived, and some of their parents started borrowing books for themselves. Not everything went smoothly. A few books never came back, and during the monsoon the shelf had to be covered with plastic sheets. Kavita kept a simple register in which borrowers wrote their names, and she found that most people returned books on time once they knew that others were waiting for them. The tea-stall owner, who had once 'doubted' the idea, began recommending books to his customers. Two years later, the panchayat gave Kavita a room in the old community hall, and the shelf grew into a library of nearly six hundred books. Yet she still keeps one shelf at the bus stop. 'The library is for those who already want to read,' she says. 'The shelf is for those who do not know yet that they want to.'
