- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. Heatwaves have become longer and more frequent in many parts of India, and their effects are felt most sharply by people who work outdoors. Construction labourers, street vendors and delivery riders cannot simply stay indoors when the temperature crosses forty-five degrees. For them, a heatwave means lost income, exhaustion and, in severe cases, a risk to life. Several cities have prepared heat action plans. These plans include early warnings, changes in working hours, drinking-water points in public places and the opening of cooling shelters. Where such plans have been followed seriously, hospitals have reported fewer heat-related admissions. The design of cities also matters. Dense concrete, little shade and few water bodies trap heat, so that some neighbourhoods remain several degrees warmer than others even at night. Planting trees, protecting lakes and using reflective materials on roofs can lower local temperatures, but these measures take years to show results. Insurance offers another line of defence. A few schemes now pay small amounts automatically to registered workers when the temperature crosses a set threshold, compensating them for days they cannot work. Such parametric insurance is still new, but it points to a future in which protection from extreme weather is treated as a basic need.
