Para Jumbles Tricks for Bank Exams: The Short Answer

Para jumbles (also called sentence rearrangement) give 4 to 6 sentences of a paragraph in the wrong order, and you must find the order that makes a logical paragraph. The quickest method is to find the opening sentence first (it introduces the topic and needs no earlier context), then build mandatory pairs using pronouns, connectors, time order and general-to-specific flow, and finally check the options instead of building the whole order from scratch.

Key takeaway for bank exams: IBPS PO, SBI PO and RRB PO usually set one para jumble of 5 to 6 sentences (5 questions), and IBPS Clerk and SBI Clerk often ask a 5-sentence version. SSC CGL and CHSL ask single sentence-rearrangement questions. Learn the six rules below: opener, closer, pronoun link, connector link, time sequence and option elimination.

2. Not an openerStarts with a pronoun (he, it, they, this), a connector (however, also, therefore) or the + something not yet mentioned"However, the plan failed." cannot come first
3. Pronoun linkA pronoun or this/these points back to a noun in the previous sentence"The scheme … It gives …"
4. Connector linkHowever, but → contrast with the earlier sentence; thus, therefore, as a result → result of the earlier sentence; also, moreover → adds to it"Sales fell. As a result, the firm cut jobs."
5. Time and process orderDates, first, then, later, finally, cause before effect2019 event before 2024 event
6. Closing sentenceConclusion, result, suggestion or summary (thus, in short, therefore, so)"Therefore, the policy needs a rethink."

How to Solve Para Jumbles Quickly (Step-by-Step Trick)

  1. Read all sentences once to get the topic. Do not try to order them yet.
  2. Remove impossible openers. Any sentence starting with a pronoun, this, however, also, thus or but cannot be first.
  3. Pick the opener from what remains: the most general sentence that names the subject.
  4. Form mandatory pairs (two sentences that must sit together), such as a noun followed by the sentence that uses its pronoun.
  5. Look at the options and remove any that break a mandatory pair or start with the wrong sentence.
  6. Read the final order once. It should flow like a single paragraph.

Para Jumbles Questions with Answers (Solved Example 1)

Arrange the sentences to form a meaningful paragraph.

  • A. As a result, many banks now offer instant loans on their apps.
  • B. Over the last few years, Indian banks have invested heavily in digital technology.
  • C. However, this speed has also raised concerns about careless borrowing.
  • D. These investments have cut the time needed to approve a small loan from days to minutes.
  • E. Regulators have therefore asked lenders to check a borrower's ability to repay before lending.

Solution:

  • Openers: A (As a result), C (However), D (These) and E (therefore) all depend on something earlier. B is the only independent sentence → B is first.
  • B–D: "invested heavily" → "These investments".
  • D–A: quicker approval → As a result, instant loans.
  • A–C: instant loans → However, this speed raised concerns.
  • C–E: concerns → regulators therefore asked for checks. E is the conclusion.

Answer: BDACE.

Para Jumbles Solved Example 2 (Fixed Opener Type)

The first sentence (P) is fixed. Arrange Q, R, S and T.

  • P. Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees that grow along tropical coastlines.
  • Q. Such evidence has led scientists to call mangroves natural sea walls.
  • R. Their thick roots trap mud and slow down the force of incoming waves.
  • S. Protecting mangroves is therefore one of the cheapest ways to guard coastal villages.
  • T. In past cyclones, villages behind dense mangroves have often suffered far less damage than villages without them.

Solution:

  • After P (what mangroves are), the next sentence must explain them using Their: R.
  • R (roots slow waves) → T (less cyclone damage, an example of the effect).
  • T → Q ("Such evidence" can only point back to the cyclone record in T).
  • S uses therefore and gives the conclusion → last.

Answer: P-R-T-Q-S.

Mandatory Pairs in Para Jumbles (Pronoun and Connector Clues)

Clue word in sentence 2Sentence 1 must contain
It, its, thisA singular noun or idea
They, them, their, these, thoseA plural noun
He, she, his, herA named person
Such (such measures)A description of those measures
However, but, yetAn idea it contrasts with
Also, moreover, furtherA similar point already made
Therefore, thus, hence, as a resultThe cause of what follows
For example, for instanceThe general claim being illustrated
The + noun (the scheme)The first mention of that noun (a scheme, or the scheme's name)

Para Jumbles Tricks: Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting with "This" or "It". These almost never open a paragraph.
  • Building the full order before checking options. Fix the opener and one pair, then eliminate options.
  • Ignoring "the" vs "a". "A new policy was announced" comes before "The policy …".
  • Placing an example before its general claim. For example follows the idea it explains.
  • Ending on a fresh idea. The last sentence closes the thought; it does not open a new topic.
