RRB NTPC vs SSC CGL 2026: Quick Answer
RRB NTPC Graduate (CEN 06/2026) recruits graduates for four railway posts at Pay Level 5 and 6 (starting basic Rs 29,200 or Rs 35,400), while SSC CGL 2026 fills Group B and C posts across central ministries at Pay Level 4 to 8 (starting basic Rs 25,500 to Rs 47,600). NTPC has two CBTs with 1/3 negative marking and no English section; CGL has two tiers with English in both, 0.50 negative marking in Tier-I and a Computer Knowledge Test and typing (DEST) in Tier-II.
As of 31 Oct 2026: NTPC Graduate applications close on 6 November 2026 (23:59 hours); RRB has said CBT dates will be published on the official RRB website. SSC CGL 2026 applications closed on 22 June 2026, and SSC's notice gives December 2026 as the tentative Tier-II schedule. RRB NTPC vs SSC CGL Salary: Pay Level and Posts
This is the biggest difference. NTPC Graduate gives you one of four posts at two pay levels. CGL gives you a ladder of five pay levels, and your rank decides which rung you get.
| Pay Level | Pay range (7th CPC) | RRB NTPC Graduate posts (CEN 06/2026) | Example SSC CGL 2026 posts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 8 | Rs 47,600-1,51,100 | None | Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer |
| Level 7 | Rs 44,900-1,42,400 | None | Assistant Section Officer (CSS, MEA, Railways), Income Tax Inspector, Central Excise Inspector, Sub Inspector (CBI) |
| Level 6 | Rs 35,400-1,12,400 | Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor (127 posts) | Junior Statistical Officer, Divisional Accountant, Executive Assistant (CBIC) |
| Level 5 | Rs 29,200-92,300 | Goods Train Manager (2,750), Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist (300), Senior Clerk cum Typist (371) | Auditor, Accountant |
| Level 4 | Rs 25,500-81,100 | None | Postal/Sorting Assistant, Tax Assistant, Senior Secretariat Assistant |
What this means: more than three-quarters of NTPC Graduate vacancies (2,750 of 3,548) are Goods Train Manager at Level 5. A CGL candidate with a top rank can start three levels higher, at Level 8, but a CGL rank near the cut-off may land a Level 4 post that pays less than NTPC Level 5. RRB NTPC vs SSC CGL Exam Pattern
RRB NTPC Graduate CBT 1 and CBT 2
| Stage | General Awareness | Mathematics | Reasoning | Total | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CBT 1 (screening) | 40 | 30 | 30 | 100 Q (1 mark each) | 90 min |
| CBT 2 (merit) | 50 | 35 | 35 | 120 Q (1 mark each) | 90 min |
RRB shortlists 15 times the community-wise vacancies of your RRB for CBT 2 (Para 13.2), and the CBT 2 normalised marks decide document verification. Minimum qualifying marks are 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25% for ST. Topic lists are in our RRB NTPC syllabus 2026.
SSC CGL Tier-I and Tier-II
| Stage | What it has | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Tier-I | Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English: 25 Q each, 1 hour with 15-minute sectional timers | 200 |
| Tier-II Paper-I, Section I | Mathematical Abilities (30 Q) + Reasoning (30 Q) | 180 |
| Tier-II Paper-I, Section II | English Language (45 Q) + General Awareness (25 Q) | 210 |
| Tier-II Paper-I, Section III | Computer Knowledge Test (20 Q, qualifying) | 60 |
| Tier-II Paper-I, Section IV | Data Entry Speed Test (qualifying) | - |
| Tier-II Paper-II / Paper-III | Statistics (JSO, SI Gr-II) / General Studies Finance and Economics (AAO, AAO-Accounts) | 200 each |
Final merit for most CGL posts uses only the aggregate of Sections I and II of Tier-II Paper-I (Para 16.14); Tier-I is a shortlisting stage. Minimum qualifying marks are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS and 20% for others. Full detail: SSC CGL exam pattern 2026.
Which Is Tougher: RRB NTPC or SSC CGL?
We compare on the official structure, not on rumours:
- Negative marking: CGL Tier-I cuts 0.50 for a 2-mark question (one quarter), and Tier-II cuts 1 mark for a 3-mark question (one third). NTPC cuts 1/3 of a 1-mark question. In both exams, a wrong answer costs about a third or a quarter of a right one, so guessing rules are similar.
- English: NTPC has no English section at all. In CGL, English is 45 of the 70 questions in Tier-II Section II. If English is your weak area, NTPC is clearly easier for you.
- Breadth of GA: NTPC gives General Awareness the largest share (40 of 100 and 50 of 120 questions), so static GK and current affairs carry more weight than in CGL.
- Maths depth: Both list algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics, but CGL Tier-II Section I uses 3-mark questions with harder data interpretation and advanced maths.
- Extra hurdles: CGL adds the Computer Knowledge Test and DEST; NTPC Graduate has dropped its typing test for CEN 06/2026 (Para 13.0(c)), with typing proficiency to be checked after joining.
Our view: CGL is the tougher exam overall because of English, the computer and typing stages and a larger, more competitive applicant pool. NTPC is tougher on GK.
RRB NTPC vs SSC CGL Age Limit and Eligibility
| Point | RRB NTPC Graduate | SSC CGL 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Crucial date for age | 01.01.2027 | 01.08.2026 |
| Upper age (UR) | 33 years for all four posts | 27, 30 or 32 years depending on post |
| OBC / SC-ST relaxation | 3 / 5 years | 3 / 5 years (Para 5.2) |
| Qualification cut-off date | Degree needed by the closing date (06.11.2026); result-awaited candidates cannot apply | Degree needed as on 01.08.2026 (Para 8) |
| Medical / physical | Medical standards A2, B2 or C2 by post | Physical standards only for some posts (for example Inspector CBIC, SI in CBI/NIA/NCB) |
The NTPC Graduate age window is wider: a 31-year-old UR graduate can apply for every NTPC Graduate post but only for CGL posts with an 18-32 limit (such as JSO). Goods Train Manager needs medical standard A2, the most demanding of the three standards in this CEN, so check the vision rules before you choose that post. Can You Prepare for RRB NTPC and SSC CGL Together?
Yes. Maths and Reasoning topics overlap almost fully. A practical split:
- Common core (about 60% of your time): arithmetic, algebra, geometry, coding-decoding, series, syllogism.
- NTPC extra: more static GK, Indian Railways facts, general science up to Class 10, and current affairs.
- CGL extra: English grammar and reading, computer basics, typing speed for DEST.
Because NTPC CBT 1 is 90 minutes for 100 questions and CGL Tier-I is 60 minutes for 100 questions, practise CGL speed and NTPC will feel comfortable. Start with the RRB NTPC CBT 1 Full Mock Test 01 and our free SSC CGL mock tests.
