Pie Chart Data Interpretation for Bank Exams: The Short Answer
A pie chart shows how a total is divided into parts, either as percentages (total 100%) or as central angles (total 360°). Every pie chart question uses three conversions: value = percentage × total ÷ 100, value = angle × total ÷ 360, and angle = percentage × 3.6. The biggest time saver is to compare parts using their percentages or angles directly and convert to actual values only when the question asks for a number.
Key takeaway for bank exams: IBPS PO, SBI PO and RRB PO prelims usually have one DI set of 5 questions, and a pie chart (single, double, or pie with a table) appears in many papers. IBPS and SBI Clerk and SSC CGL Tier 2 also ask pie chart sets. Learn the 3.6 rule, work in percentages, and use the "same base" trick for ratios. Every value on this page was computed in Python.
DI questions rely on fast percentages and ratios, so revise percentage tricks for SSC CGL and caselet DI for SBI Clerk with this note.
Pie Chart Formulas for Data Interpretation
| Find | Percentage pie | Degree pie |
|---|---|---|
| Value of a part | % × Total ÷ 100 | Angle × Total ÷ 360 |
| Percentage of a part | Given | Angle ÷ 3.6 |
| Central angle of a part | % × 3.6 | Given |
| Ratio of two parts | %₁ : %₂ | Angle₁ : Angle₂ |
| Part A as % of part B | %A ÷ %B × 100 | AngleA ÷ AngleB × 100 |
Useful conversions to remember: 10% = 36°, 25% = 90°, 50% = 180°, 1% = 3.6°, 1° = 0.2777…%.
Percentage Pie Chart Questions (Solved Set 1)
Data: The pie chart shows a family's monthly spending of ₹60,000.
| Item | Share |
|---|---|
| Rent | 25% |
| Food | 30% |
| Education | 15% |
| Transport | 10% |
| Savings | 12% |
| Others | 8% |
Q1. How much more is spent on food than on rent? (30 − 25)% of 60,000 = ₹3,000. (No need to find each value separately.)
Q2. What is the ratio of spending on education to transport? 15 : 10 = 3 : 2.
Q3. Savings are what percent of food spending? 12 ÷ 30 × 100 = 40%.
Q4. What is the central angle for education? 15 × 3.6 = 54°.
Q5. If total spending rises by 20% but rent stays the same amount, what percentage of the new total is rent? Rent = ₹15,000. New total = ₹72,000. 15,000 ÷ 72,000 × 100 = 20.83% (approx.).
Degree Pie Chart Questions (Solved Set 2)
Data: 1,800 students of a college play exactly one sport. The pie chart gives the central angles.
| Sport | Central angle |
|---|---|
| Cricket | 120° |
| Football | 72° |
| Hockey | 54° |
| Tennis | 36° |
| Badminton | 78° |
Check: 120 + 72 + 54 + 36 + 78 = 360°. ✔
Q1. How many students play cricket? 120 ÷ 360 × 1,800 = 600.
Q2. How many more students play cricket than tennis? (120 − 36) ÷ 360 × 1,800 = 420.
Q3. What percentage of students play football? 72 ÷ 3.6 = 20%.
Q4. Students playing hockey and tennis together are what percent of cricket players? (54 + 36) ÷ 120 × 100 = 75%.
Q5. How many students play badminton? 78 ÷ 360 × 1,800 = 390.
Shortcut: 1,800 ÷ 360 = 5 students per degree. Multiply each angle by 5: cricket 600, football 360, hockey 270, tennis 180, badminton 390.
Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation (Solved Set 3)
Bank PO exams often give two pie charts with different totals and ask you to combine them.
Data: A company has 2,400 employees, of whom 1,000 are women. Pie chart A shows all employees by department; pie chart B shows women by department.
| Department | All employees (A) | Women (B) |
|---|---|---|
| HR | 10% | 20% |
| Sales | 35% | 30% |
| IT | 30% | 25% |
| Finance | 25% | 25% |
Step 1: convert to numbers. All: HR 240, Sales 840, IT 720, Finance 600. Women: HR 200, Sales 300, IT 250, Finance 250. Men = all − women: HR 40, Sales 540, IT 470, Finance 350.
Q1. What percentage of HR employees are women? 200 ÷ 240 × 100 = 83.33%.
Q2. How many men work in IT? 720 − 250 = 470.
Q3. What is the ratio of men in Sales to men in Finance? 540 : 350 = 54 : 35.
Q4. In which department are women the smallest share? Sales 35.71%, IT 34.72%, Finance 41.67%, HR 83.33% → IT.
Trap: you cannot compare the two pies by percentage alone (Finance is 25% in both, but 600 employees vs 250 women). Always convert to numbers when the totals differ.
Percentage to Fraction Table for Fast Pie Chart Calculation
Pie chart totals in bank exams are chosen so that common percentages turn into simple fractions. Learn these and you will rarely need long multiplication.
| Percentage | Fraction | Degrees |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 1/20 | 18° |
| 8⅓% | 1/12 | 30° |
| 10% | 1/10 | 36° |
| 12.5% | 1/8 | 45° |
| 16⅔% | 1/6 | 60° |
| 20% | 1/5 | 72° |
| 25% | 1/4 | 90° |
| 33⅓% | 1/3 | 120° |
| 37.5% | 3/8 | 135° |
| 62.5% | 5/8 | 225° |
Examples: 37.5% of 48,000 = 3/8 × 48,000 = 18,000. 16⅔% of 7,200 = 7,200 ÷ 6 = 1,200. 12.5% of 64,000 = 64,000 ÷ 8 = 8,000. A 135° slice of 2,400 = 3/8 × 2,400 = 900.
Reading a pie chart in 20 seconds: before the first question, copy the labels and shares into a two-column table, check that the shares add up to 100% (or 360°), and write the "per 1%" or "per 1°" value beside the total. Every later question then takes one multiplication.
Pie Chart DI Tricks for IBPS PO and SBI PO
| Trick | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Work in percentages or degrees | Question asks for a ratio, difference in %, or "what percent of" |
| Per-degree or per-percent value | Total ÷ 360 or ÷ 100 gives a multiplier for all parts |
| Difference first, then convert | "How much more" questions |
| Same-base comparison | Two parts from the same pie: compare their shares directly |
| Convert both pies to numbers | Two pies with different totals |
| Approximate | Options are far apart (e.g. 18,000 vs 21,000) |
Pie Chart with Table (Mixed DI) Approach
Some sets give a pie chart of shares and a table of extra data (for example, the pie gives each city's share of total sales and the table gives the ratio of online to offline sales). Steps:
- Convert the pie share of each item into a number.
- Split each number using the table ratio (online : offline = 3 : 2 means online = 3/5 of it).
- Answer using the split values.
Example: City X has 20% of total sales of 50,000 units, and its online : offline ratio is 3 : 2. Online sales of X = 20% × 50,000 × 3/5 = 6,000 units.
Pie Chart Data Interpretation: Common Mistakes
- Using 100 for a degree pie. Degree pies total 360°.
- Comparing percentages across two pies with different totals.
- Forgetting "approximately" when the answer is a recurring decimal; choose the nearest option.
- Reading the wrong slice. Note each label and value in a small table before solving.
- Converting every slice first. For ratio and percentage questions, work with the shares.
