- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. India produces more milk than any other country, yet a large part of it comes from small farmers who own just two or three animals. For these households, a cow or buffalo is not only a source of income but also a form of savings that can be sold in an emergency. Cooperative dairies have played a central role in this story. By collecting milk twice a day from village centres and paying farmers regularly, they removed the need for each farmer to find a buyer. The cooperatives also provide cattle feed, veterinary care and training, often at lower cost than private suppliers. The sector still faces difficulties. Average yield per animal remains low compared with many countries, partly because of poor nutrition and limited access to better breeds. Rising temperatures are a fresh worry, as heat stress reduces milk output. Experts recommend wider use of balanced feed, artificial insemination with high-quality breeds and simple cooling measures in cattle sheds. Many believe that if these steps are taken, dairying can raise rural incomes faster than almost any other farm activity, because milk brings in cash every day rather than once a season.
