- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. For most families in rural India, a single bad event can undo years of saving. A hospital stay, the death of an earning member or the loss of a crop to hail can push a household into debt that takes a decade to repay. Insurance is designed to spread such risks across many people, yet only a small share of rural households hold any policy beyond the crop cover that comes bundled with a farm loan. Agents rarely visit villages because the premium on a small policy earns them very little commission. Many people also distrust insurance because they have heard of claims being rejected on technical grounds, often because a form was filled in wrongly. In recent years, low-premium life and accident cover sold through bank accounts has reached millions of people who had never bought a policy before. The premium is deducted automatically once a year, and the claim is settled through the same branch. Experts say the next step is to make claims simple and quick, because a policy that pays out on time is the best advertisement for insurance in a village. They also argue that people must be told clearly what is covered and what is not, so that trust is not lost when a claim does not qualify.
