SSC CHSL Skill Test 2026: Quick Answer

The SSC CHSL 2026 skill test is Section-IV of Tier-II, held in Session-II on the same day as the written sections. LDC/JSA candidates take a 10-minute typing test at 35 words per minute in English or 30 wpm in Hindi. Data Entry Operator (DEO) candidates take a 15-minute skill test at 8,000 key depressions per hour (Part B) or 15,000 key depressions per hour (Part A), depending on the department. Both tests are qualifying only.

Key takeaway: The 2026 notice does not print an error limit; it says the test is evaluated as per SSC's guidelines with errors worked out to 2 decimal places. In the latest allocation (CHSL 2025, 17.08.2026), SSC allowed 7% mistakes for UR and 10% for all other categories in the LDC/JSA typing test, and 5% for UR and 7% for others in the DEO skill test.

Official sources: SSC CHSL 2026 notice (PDF), Para 13.9.13 and 17.6; CHSL 2025 FRTA write-up of 17.08.2026; SSC guidelines for evaluation of Typing Test/DEST scripts.

Practise all three tests on our free SSC CHSL typing test (LDC/JSA, DEO Part A and Part B), or the SSC Hindi typing test if you chose Hindi medium. Both count key depressions, full and half mistakes and your error percentage.

SSC CHSL Skill Test Pattern 2026 (Part A, Part B, Part C)

TestForLanguageTimePassageSpeed required
Part A: Skill TestDEO / DEO Grade 'A' in Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, SSC and Ministry of Culture (Para 8.1)English15 minutesAbout 3,700 to 4,000 key depressions15,000 key depressions per hour
Part B: Skill TestDEO / DEO Grade 'A' in all other departmentsEnglish15 minutesAbout 2,000 to 2,200 key depressions8,000 key depressions per hour
Part C: Typing TestLDC / JSAEnglish or Hindi (chosen in the application)10 minutesGiven text passageEnglish 35 wpm (about 10,500 KDPH); Hindi 30 wpm (about 9,000 KDPH)
  • Scribe-eligible candidates get 5 extra minutes: 20 minutes for the DEO test and 15 minutes for the typing test.
  • VH candidates who opted for a scribe get a passage dictator in the LDC/JSA typing test.
  • The passage can also be shown on the computer screen.

SSC CHSL Typing Speed Explained: wpm and Key Depressions

SSC counts every key you press, including the space bar, as one key depression, and treats 5 key depressions as one word. That is how the notice links the two units:

RequirementPer hourPer minuteIn the test time
LDC/JSA English, 35 wpm10,500 KD175 KD1,750 KD in 10 minutes
LDC/JSA Hindi, 30 wpm9,000 KD150 KD1,500 KD in 10 minutes
DEO Part B8,000 KDabout 133 KD2,000 KD in 15 minutes
DEO Part A15,000 KD250 KD3,750 KD in 15 minutes

The per-minute and in-test figures are our arithmetic on the notice's hourly speeds. They match the passage sizes in the notice: Part B's passage of 2,000 to 2,200 key depressions is what 8,000 KDPH covers in 15 minutes.

SSC CHSL Typing Test Errors Allowed (Category-wise)

CategoryLDC/JSA typing testDEO Grade 'A' skill test
UR7%5%
SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ESM10%7%
OH, HH, VH, PwD-Others10%7%

These are the cut-offs SSC fixed in the CHSL 2025 allocation (17.08.2026); they were the same in the CHSL 2024 final result. SSC fixes the limits for CHSL 2026 when it declares that result, so treat them as the expected standard, not a guarantee.

Full Mistakes and Half Mistakes in the SSC CHSL Typing Test

SSC's evaluation guidelines (used for both the typing test and the DEO test):

Full mistakeHalf mistake
Omitting a word or figureSpacing error: "Ihope" or "I h ave"
Typing a wrong word or figureWrong capital or small letter (not applied to Hindi)
Adding a word not in the passagePunctuation mark missed, added or changed
Spelling error of any kindTwo words transposed: "hope I" for "I hope"
Repeating a wordParagraph started with spaces instead of the Tab key
Leaving a word incomplete

The guidelines also say: type figures and years exactly as in the passage, use only one space after a punctuation mark, start every paragraph with the Tab key, and you do not have to retype the passage if you finish early (you may correct your mistakes in the remaining time).

SSC CHSL Hindi Typing Test Rules

  • Hindi typing must be done in the Mangal font only. Using any other font means you do not qualify (Para 13.9.13.7 viii).
  • The medium (Hindi or English) is chosen in the online application and cannot be changed later.
  • If you opt for Hindi and type in English (or the other way round), you get no credit.

Who Is Exempted From the SSC CHSL Skill Test?

  • DEO skill test: nobody. The notice says no candidate is exempted.
  • LDC/JSA typing test: only PwD candidates certified by a Civil Surgeon of a government health institution, in the prescribed format (Annexure-XIII), as unable to type because of a permanent physical disability. The exemption does not cover candidates who are only visually or hearing impaired.

How to Prepare for the SSC CHSL Typing Test

  1. Measure in key depressions, not just wpm. Count every key including spaces; 1,750 correct key depressions in 10 minutes is the English LDC/JSA target.
  2. Accuracy first. At 7% (UR), a 350-word passage allows only about 24 full mistakes; type slower and cleaner rather than fast and messy.
  3. Practise on the SSC layout. The test uses a plain text box with no autocorrect, so turn off spell-check when practising.
  4. Use the Tab key for paragraphs and one space after punctuation, as SSC instructs.
  5. Hindi typists: practise in Mangal with the keyboard layout you will use in the exam.
