RRB NTPC 2026: there is no typing skill test this year. CEN 06/2026 Para 13.0(c) and CEN 07/2026 dispense with the CBTST for all typist posts; proficiency is checked after joining (PIB, 11 October 2026). The practice here still builds the same skill.

Times and passage sizes: SSC CGL 2026 notice Para 13.9.10 and SSC CHSL 2026 notice Para 13.9.13. Scribe-eligible candidates get 5 extra minutes in both. All typing tests are qualifying: they decide whether you can be selected, not your rank.

How to use this SSC typing speed test

  1. Pick the test and your category. The error limit and speed rule change with both; the line under the options shows what applies to you and where it comes from.
  2. Choose the screen. "Exam screen" puts the passage on top, the typing box below and the timer and candidate panel at the side, like the computer-based test. "Modern" adds live speed and highlighting.
  3. Set the options. Turn backspace off to train for accuracy, use blind mode to stop watching your own text, and set the font size you read best at.
  4. Type. The clock starts with your first key. Use the Tab key at the start of each paragraph, as SSC asks. Paste is blocked.
  5. Read the report. You get gross and net wpm and KDPH, full and half mistakes, error %, accuracy, pass or fail for every category, your passage marked word by word, and a minute-by-minute speed graph. Your last 10 attempts stay in this browser.

Figures are correct key depressions, rounded up. The typing tests last 10 minutes and the DEO tests and CGL DEST 15 minutes.

Full mistakes and half mistakes in the SSC typing test

From SSC's revised guidelines for evaluation of Typing Test/DEST scripts (English/Hindi), which the CGL and CHSL notices both refer to:

Full mistakes (count 1 each)

  • Omission of a word or figure
  • Substitution of a wrong word or figure
  • Addition of a word or figure not in the passage
  • Spelling error: a letter added, missed, repeated or changed
  • Repetition of a word, e.g. "I shall shall be"
  • Incomplete (half-typed) word, for any reason

Half mistakes (count ½ each)

  • Spacing: "Ihope" or "I h ave"
  • Wrong capitalisation (not applied to Hindi scripts)
  • Punctuation mark missed, added or changed
  • Transposition: "I hope" typed as "hope I"
  • Paragraph started with spaces instead of the Tab key

The same guidelines tell candidates to type figures and years exactly as printed, use the Tab key to start every paragraph, leave one space after each punctuation mark, and not repeat the passage once it is finished (you may go back and correct mistakes within the time). Any irrelevant matter typed is a mistake.

How gross speed, net speed, KDPH and error % are calculated

Key depressions (KD)

Every key you press to put a character on screen, including the space bar and Enter, is one key depression. SSC treats 5 key depressions as one word.

1 word = 5 KD  ·  wpm = KDPH ÷ 300

Gross speed

All key depressions you typed, right or wrong, divided by the time.

Gross wpm = (KD typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Net speed and KDPH

Only the words typed exactly right count. The CHSL notice judges DEO speed "on the basis of the correct entry of words/key depressions" and LDC/JSA speed "on the accuracy of typing", so net KDPH is the figure to compare with 8,000, 15,000, 10,500 or 9,000.

Net KDPH = correct KD × 60 ÷ minutes

Error percentage

SSC's guidelines define the mistakes and the notices round errors to 2 decimals, but no notice prints the formula. This tool uses the form SSC applies in stenography transcription, on the part of the passage you reached.

Error % = (full + half ÷ 2) × 100 ÷ words covered

Worked example: in 10 minutes you type 1,900 key depressions and 1,780 of them are in correctly typed words, with 9 full and 6 half mistakes over 330 words. Gross speed = 1,900 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 38 wpm. Net KDPH = 1,780 × 6 = 10,680, which clears the CHSL 10,500 KDPH mark. Error % = (9 + 3) × 100 ÷ 330 = 3.64%, inside the 7% UR limit.

SSC typing test passages (33 English, 8 Hindi)

Every passage is original and written in the style of SSC skill test matter: governance, economy, science, environment, history and everyday civic topics, about 1,800 to 2,500 key depressions each. Difficulty is worked out from average word length, long words, punctuation, capitals and figures. Passages with a page of their own show the full text, tricky words and timing; the rest open straight in the test above. Hindi passages are on the SSC Hindi typing test page.

Tips to clear the SSC typing test

  • Accuracy first, speed second. One skipped line can add ten full mistakes. Keep your eyes on the passage and move a finger along if you lose your place.
  • Watch the half mistakes. Capitals at the start of names, commas before "which", hyphens in words like "first-time" and the space after every full stop cost half a mistake each.
  • Copy figures exactly. Type "2005" if the passage says 2005 and "two lakh" if it says two lakh; SSC's instructions treat any other form as a mistake.
  • Practise in 15-minute blocks. The CGL DEST and the DEO tests are 15 minutes long. Stamina in the last five minutes is where most candidates slow down; the speed graph shows if you do.
  • Use the Tab key. A paragraph started with spaces is a half mistake under SSC's guidelines.
  • Know your keyboard. Exam centres use standard desktop keyboards. If you practise on a laptop, try a full-size keyboard before the exam.

Frequently asked questions

Which SSC exams have a typing test in 2026?

SSC CGL 2026 has the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) as Section-IV of Tier-II Paper-I: about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, qualifying for all posts. SSC CHSL 2026 has a typing test for LDC/JSA (35 wpm English or 30 wpm Hindi in 10 minutes) and a skill test for DEO (8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour in 15 minutes) as Section-IV of Tier-II.

SSC typing test kitne wpm ka hota hai?

CHSL LDC/JSA ke liye English me 35 wpm (about 10,500 KDPH) aur Hindi me 30 wpm (about 9,000 KDPH) chahiye, 10 minute me. CHSL DEO ke liye 8,000 ya 15,000 KDPH. CGL DEST me koi wpm fix nahi hai: 15 minute me about 2,000 key depressions ka passage hota hai aur sirf error limit dekhi jaati hai.

SSC typing test me kitni galti allowed hai?

CGL 2026 DEST: UR 20%, OBC/EWS 25%, baaki sab 30% (notice Para 16.2); higher-standard posts ke liye CGL 2025 me UR 5%, OBC/SC/ST/EWS/ESM 7%, PwBD 10% tha. CHSL typing test me CHSL 2025 result ke hisaab se UR 7%, baaki 10%; DEO skill test me UR 5%, baaki 7%.

Is the SSC typing test result added to my marks?

No. The CGL DEST and the CHSL typing and skill tests are qualifying only. You must clear them to be selected for the posts that need them, but they do not change your merit rank, which comes from the written sections.

What is a good typing speed to clear the SSC CGL DEST?

The notice sets no minimum speed, but to finish a 2,000 key depression passage in 15 minutes you need about 133 key depressions a minute, roughly 27 wpm. Accuracy matters more: at the UR limit of 20%, a 350-word passage allows about 70 mistakes, while the higher standard (5% for UR in CGL 2025) allows about 17.

Is there a typing test in RRB NTPC 2026?

No. CEN 06/2026 (Graduate) says in Para 13.0(c) that the Computer Based Typing Skill Test for Senior Clerk cum Typist and Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist has been dispensed with, and CEN 07/2026 (Undergraduate) does the same for Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist. Typing proficiency will be assessed after joining.

Can I practise on a mobile phone?

You can open the test, but the real exam is taken on a computer keyboard, and phone keyboards add autocorrect and suggestions that change your result. Use a laptop or desktop, or connect a keyboard to your phone.

Is this the official SSC typing software?

No. It applies the mistake rules SSC publishes, but SSC does not publish its software or its exact error formula. Paragraph (Tab key) errors are not checked. Use the result to track progress, not as an official score.
