- Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. For many first-time account holders, the hardest part of banking is not opening an account but trusting it. A farmer who has kept cash at home for decades may see little reason to deposit money in a branch twenty kilometres away, especially if a single visit costs him a day's wages. Business correspondents, who offer basic services in villages on behalf of banks, have narrowed this distance. Yet distance was only half the problem. The other half was confidence: knowing what a passbook entry means, how interest is earned and what to do when a transaction fails. Financial literacy campaigns often try to solve this with lectures and leaflets, but people rarely change long-held habits because of a pamphlet. What works better, field workers report, is learning tied to a real decision: explaining a recurring deposit at the moment a family is saving for a daughter's school fees, or showing how an insurance claim is filed just after a neighbour's crop has failed. Lessons attached to a need are remembered; lessons delivered in the abstract are forgotten by the next harvest. There is also a quieter barrier. Many new customers feel that bank staff look down on them, and they hesitate to ask questions that might reveal what they do not know. A courteous correspondent who answers the same question patiently, for the third time, may do more for inclusion than any advertisement. Banks that measure success only by the number of accounts opened therefore miss the point. An account that is opened and then left dormant has added a number to a report, not a customer to the bank.
Q1.According to the passage, what was the 'other half' of the problem faced by first-time account holders?
- A.Frequent failure of passbook printers
- B.A lack of confidence in understanding and using banking services
- C.The low rate of interest on deposits
- D.The absence of any bank branch in the district
- E.The high fees charged by business correspondents
Q2.Why, according to the passage, do lectures and leaflets often fail to improve financial literacy?
- A.People seldom change long-held habits because of information given in the abstract
- B.They contain incorrect information
- C.Field workers do not distribute them properly
- D.Most villagers cannot read leaflets
- E.Banks print too few of them
Q3.Which of the following would be the best example of the approach that field workers recommend?
- A.Sending a leaflet on interest rates to every household
- B.Holding a weekly lecture on banking for all villagers
- C.Explaining an education loan to a family whose son has just got a college seat
- D.Running a television advertisement on account opening
- E.Putting up posters about savings schemes in the market
Start the test to answer these. Correct answers and explanations are shown after you submit.
