- Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below. Ramesh had repaired bicycles under the same neem tree for thirty-one years. His shop was nothing more than a tin box of tools, a basin of water for finding punctures and a wooden bench on which customers waited and argued about cricket. When the town's first electric scooter showroom opened across the road, his neighbours shook their heads in sympathy. 'Your days are over,' the tea seller told him, not unkindly. For a few months it seemed he was right. Schoolboys who once wheeled in their cycles every week now rode past on scooters, and Ramesh spent long afternoons cleaning tools that did not need cleaning. Then, one evening, a young woman pushed a scooter to his bench. The showroom was closed, she said, and the tyre had gone flat two kilometres from home. Ramesh had never touched such a machine, but a tyre, he reasoned, was a tyre. He found the puncture, patched it and refused to take more than his usual fee. Word travelled. Scooter owners discovered that the showroom took three days to fix what the old man under the neem tree could fix in twenty minutes. Ramesh bought a second-hand manual from a mechanic in the city and read it slowly at night, with a magnifying glass. He did not pretend to understand the batteries; those he sent politely to the showroom. But brakes, tyres, mirrors and loose panels became his work, and the showroom manager, rather than resenting him, began sending customers his way. Today the bench under the neem tree is crowded again. The arguments are still about cricket, though the queue now has more scooters than cycles. When people ask Ramesh how he survived, he shrugs. 'Machines change,' he says. 'People still need someone who will listen to the noise and tell them what is wrong.'
