- Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. When a bank decides to close a rural branch because most transactions have moved to mobile phones, the decision looks sensible on a spreadsheet. Footfall has fallen, rent and staff costs remain, and the same services are available through an app. What the spreadsheet does not show is who is still walking through the door. In many towns, the remaining visitors are disproportionately elderly customers, small traders who deposit cash every evening, and people whose phones are shared within the family. For these customers, an app is not a perfect substitute. An elderly pensioner may be perfectly capable of using a phone but unwilling to approve a large transfer without speaking to a person. A trader handling cash cannot deposit it digitally at all. Closing the branch does not move these customers online; it often moves them to the nearest moneylender or leaves their cash under a mattress. None of this means that every branch must stay open forever. It does mean that a closure should be judged by what happens to the customers who remain, not by the average customer. Some banks now pair closures with a weekly visiting officer or a cash-deposit machine at a post office, which keeps the most dependent customers inside the formal system at modest cost. The question a bank should ask is not 'How many people still come?' but 'What will the people who still come do instead?'
Q1.According to the passage, what does the 'spreadsheet' fail to show?
- A.The fall in footfall at the branch
- B.Which customers still depend on the branch
- C.The rent paid for the branch
- D.The services available on the app
- E.The staff costs of the branch
Q2.Why is an app not a substitute for a small trader, according to the passage?
- A.He prefers to borrow from moneylenders
- B.He handles cash, which cannot be deposited digitally
- C.He does not own a phone
- D.He visits the branch only once a year
- E.He is unwilling to speak to bank staff
Q3.According to the author, how should a branch closure be judged?
- A.By the number of accounts opened that year
- B.By the average customer's preference
- C.By the number of app downloads
- D.By its effect on the customers who remain
- E.By the savings in rent alone
Start the test to answer these. Correct answers and explanations are shown after you submit.
