RRB Group D Salary 2026: Quick Answer
As per the official RRB CEN No. 09/2025 (Recruitment for Various Posts in Level 1 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix), every RRB Group D post starts at an initial pay of ₹18,000 a month in Pay Level 1. Add Dearness Allowance at 60% (₹10,800), HRA and Transport Allowance, and our approximate calculation puts the monthly gross at about ₹32,000 to ₹36,400 and the in-hand at about ₹29,000 to ₹33,500 before income tax, depending on the city.
Key takeaway: The pay level and the ₹18,000 initial pay are printed in the CEN (vacancy summary table on page 4). The gross and in-hand figures are our approximate calculations from official DA, HRA and TA rates; RRB does not print a city-wise salary table.

RRB Group D Post-Wise Salary (All Posts Are Level 1)
A common question is whether a Track Maintainer earns less than a Pointsman or an Assistant (S&T). Under CEN 09/2025 every notified post is in Level 1 with the same ₹18,000 initial pay. What differs is the department, the medical standard and the type of work. These are the posts listed in Annexure-A (Post Parameters):
| Post (Annexure-A) | Department | Medical standard | Initial pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant TRD | Electrical | B1 | ₹18,000 |
| Assistant Operations (Electrical) | Electrical (General Services / Workshop) | B1 / C1 | ₹18,000 |
| Assistant TL and AC | Electrical | B1 | ₹18,000 |
| Assistant Loco Shed (Electrical) | Electrical (Electrical / Diesel Shed) | B1 | ₹18,000 |

| Assistant Carriage and Wagon | Mechanical | B1 | ₹18,000 |

RRB Group D Salary Structure: What Is Added to Basic Pay
Your monthly pay = basic pay + DA + HRA + Transport Allowance (+ any post-specific allowance your division pays). Here is each component for a new Group D employee on ₹18,000 basic:
| Component | How it is calculated | Amount on ₹18,000 basic |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pay | Cell 1 of Level 1 | ₹18,000 |
| DA | 60% of basic | ₹10,800 |
| HRA, X city | 30% of basic | ₹5,400 |
| HRA, Y city | 20% of basic | ₹3,600 |
| HRA, Z town | 10% of basic | ₹1,800 |
| TA, listed higher-TA city | ₹1,350 + 60% DA on it | ₹2,160 |
| TA, other places | ₹900 + 60% DA on it | ₹1,440 |
| NPS deduction | 10% of (basic + DA) | ₹2,880 |
Why TA is ₹1,350 / ₹900 and not ₹3,600 / ₹1,800: under the 7th CPC TA order, Levels 1 and 2 get ₹1,350 or ₹900 (plus DA), and the higher ₹3,600 or ₹1,800 rate applies once pay reaches ₹24,200 (modification OM). A new Group D employee on ₹18,000 is below that threshold.
DA status for railway employees (21 October 2026)
The Union Cabinet raised DA by 2 points over 58% on 18 April 2026, so DA is 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026. As of the morning of 21 October 2026, no Cabinet decision or Department of Expenditure order had been issued for the instalment due from 1 July 2026, so this page uses 60%. When that instalment is announced, add the new percentage of ₹18,000 to every gross figure below.
RRB Group D In-Hand Salary 2026 (Approximate)
Method: basic ₹18,000 + DA 60% + HRA + TA with DA, minus NPS at 10% of (basic + DA). Income tax, professional tax and other deductions are not included. "X city" means a city that is both HRA class X and on the higher-TA list (for example Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru).
| City type | Basic | DA 60% | HRA | TA (with DA) | Gross (approx) | NPS 10% | In-hand before tax (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| X city | ₹18,000 | ₹10,800 | ₹5,400 | ₹2,160 | ₹36,360 | ₹2,880 | ₹33,480 |
| Y city | ₹18,000 | ₹10,800 | ₹3,600 | ₹1,440 | ₹33,840 | ₹2,880 | ₹30,960 |
| Z town | ₹18,000 | ₹10,800 | ₹1,800 | ₹1,440 | ₹32,040 | ₹2,880 | ₹29,160 |
Worked example: Track Maintainer Grade IV posted in a Z-class town
- Basic pay: ₹18,000
- DA at 60%: ₹10,800
- HRA at 10%: ₹1,800
- TA: ₹900 + 60% = ₹1,440
- Gross: ₹32,040
- NPS: 10% of (₹18,000 + ₹10,800) = ₹2,880
- In-hand before tax: about ₹29,160
Worked example: Assistant (S and T) posted in Mumbai
Basic ₹18,000 + DA ₹10,800 + HRA 30% ₹5,400 + TA ₹2,160 = ₹36,360 gross. After NPS of ₹2,880, in-hand before tax is about ₹33,480.
Railway quarters: if you are allotted railway accommodation, HRA is not paid, so subtract the HRA column. The Government's own 14% NPS contribution goes into your pension account and does not appear in take-home pay.
RRB Group D Pay Scale and Annual Increment (Level 1 Pay Matrix)
Level 1 has 40 cells. You join at cell 1 (₹18,000) and normally move one cell up with each annual increment. The first cells, from the official 7th CPC pay matrix (Table 5 of the 7th CPC Report):
| Cell in Level 1 | Basic pay | DA at 60% | Basic + DA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (joining) | ₹18,000 | ₹10,800 | ₹28,800 |
| 2 | ₹18,500 | ₹11,100 | ₹29,600 |
| 3 | ₹19,100 | ₹11,460 | ₹30,560 |
| 4 | ₹19,700 | ₹11,820 | ₹31,520 |
| 5 | ₹20,300 | ₹12,180 | ₹32,480 |
| 6 | ₹20,900 | ₹12,540 | ₹33,440 |
| 7 | ₹21,500 | ₹12,900 | ₹34,400 |
| 11 | ₹24,200 | ₹14,520 | ₹38,720 |
| 40 (top of Level 1) | ₹56,900 | ₹34,140 | ₹91,040 |
Source: 7th CPC Pay Matrix (Civilian Employees), Table 5; the 7th CPC report is listed on the Department of Expenditure website. Each increment is about 3% of basic, rounded to the next ₹100. When basic reaches ₹24,200 (cell 11), TA moves to the higher ₹3,600 / ₹1,800 rate.
RRB Group D Salary After Promotion
Group D is the entry level, so salary grows mainly through promotion to higher levels of the same pay matrix. The starting cell of each level from the official matrix shows what a move up is worth:
| Pay Level | First cell (basic) | Gap over Level 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | ₹18,000 | — |
| Level 2 | ₹19,900 | ₹1,900 |
| Level 3 | ₹21,700 | ₹3,700 |
| Level 4 | ₹25,500 | ₹7,500 |
On promotion, pay is fixed in the higher level under the pay rules; it is not simply the first cell. Which posts you can be promoted to depends on your department's promotion rules, which the CEN does not list, so we do not name promotion posts here.
RRB Group D Salary After 8th Pay Commission
The Cabinet approved the Terms of Reference of the 8th Central Pay Commission on 28 October 2025 and gave it 18 months from its constitution to report (PIB). As of 21 October 2026 no new pay matrix or fitment factor has been notified, so Group D pay stays at Level 1 of the 7th CPC matrix (₹18,000 start). Railway employees are covered by the central pay commission, so any change will apply once the Government accepts and notifies it.
