RRB NTPC Typing Test 2026: Quick Answer

There is no RRB NTPC typing test in 2026. The Railway Board has dispensed with the qualifying Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) for all four typist posts in the 2026 NTPC Graduate (CEN 06/2026) and Undergraduate (CEN 07/2026) notifications, so selection is CBT 1 → CBT 2 → Document Verification and Medical Examination.

Key takeaway: Typing has not disappeared from the job. Railway Board letter No. E(NG)II/2026/RR-1/37 (RBE No. 82/2026, dated 07.10.2026) says candidates "are still expected to have basic computer proficiency, including adequate typing proficiency using computers. Their proficiency in this regard shall be assessed after joining, and unsatisfactory performance may affect/delay their confirmation or promotion."

Some typing-practice websites still describe the CBTST as mandatory for NTPC UG typist posts. That was true up to the 2024 notifications; it is not true for the 2026 CENs. Applications for the Graduate posts close on 6 November 2026, 11:59 PM (PIB, 11 October 2026).

What the Railway Board Order Says (RBE No. 82/2026)

DetailWhat the order states
Letter No.E(NG)II/2026/RR-1/37
RBE No.82/2026
Date07.10.2026
Issued byRailway Board, Estt.(N) Directorate (signed by the Director, Estt.(N))
Sent toGeneral Managers (P) of all Zonal Railways and Production Units; Chairpersons of all RRBs
Decision (Para 2)"dispense with the requirement of qualifying the Typing Test for NTPC Graduate and Undergraduate recruitment" to Clerk-cum-Typist (Level-2), Senior Clerk (Level-5), Accounts Clerk (Level-2) and Junior Accounts Assistant (Level-5)
Applies toCentralised Employment Notifications (CENs) "to be notified in 2026"
After joining (Para 3)Computer and typing proficiency "shall be assessed after joining"; unsatisfactory performance "may affect/delay their confirmation or promotion"

The order is listed on the Railway Board's E(NG)-II circulars page on indianrailways.gov.in. It does not set a typing speed or a format for the post-joining assessment, so treat any website that quotes a "new after-joining WPM" as unverified.

PIB says the same for CEN 06/2026: there is a "dispensation of the Computer-Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) for the posts of Junior Accounts Assistant Cum Typist and Senior Clerk Cum Typist."

What This Means for Your RRB NTPC Preparation

  1. Your rank now depends only on CBT 2 marks (after normalisation) for the typist posts too. Put the hours you would have spent on a typing test into CBT practice. Start with the RRB NTPC syllabus 2026 and the RRB NTPC maths formulas.
  2. Check your eligibility before 6 November 2026. Age limits and qualifications are unchanged by this order; see RRB NTPC eligibility and age limit 2026 and the full RRB NTPC 2026 recruitment details.
  3. Keep typing on your to-do list if you want a clerk or accounts post. The order says proficiency will be assessed after joining and can affect confirmation or promotion. 15 minutes a day on our free SSC typing test (English) or the Hindi typing test keeps you ready; the old benchmark of 30 WPM English / 25 WPM Hindi is a sensible target.

Will typing be checked after joining Railways?

Yes. The Railway Board order and both CENs say candidates are still expected to have basic computer and typing proficiency, that it "shall be assessed after joining", and that unsatisfactory performance may affect or delay confirmation or promotion. No speed or test format for this has been published.

Does the typing test removal apply to RRB NTPC UG (Junior Clerk cum Typist)?

Does this change apply to candidates of CEN 05/2024 or 06/2024?

The order covers CENs "to be notified in 2026". The 2024 NTPC notifications had their own CBTST, held by the RRBs in December 2025 to February 2026.
