NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI Difference: The Short Answer

NEFT and RTGS are run by the RBI; IMPS and UPI are run by NPCI. RTGS settles each payment individually and instantly and is meant for large amounts (minimum ₹2 lakh, no upper limit). NEFT settles payments in 48 half-hourly batches with no minimum or maximum set by the RBI. IMPS is instant, 24x7, with a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit. UPI is instant, uses a virtual address or QR code, and has a general limit of ₹1 lakh, with higher limits for some verified merchant categories. NEFT has run 24x7 since 16 December 2019 and RTGS since 14 December 2020.

Key takeaway for bank exams: Payment-system questions appear in almost every IBPS, SBI and RBI banking awareness paper: who operates the system, the minimum for RTGS, NEFT batches, the IMPS limit, and the dates NEFT and RTGS went 24x7. All facts here are taken from the RBI's NEFT and RTGS FAQs and NPCI's product pages, as of October 2026.

How NEFT, RTGS and UPI Payments Work (Step by Step)

NEFT: you add the beneficiary's name, account number and IFSC in net banking and send the money. Your bank debits your account and passes the instruction to the NEFT system. In the next half-hourly batch, the RBI settles the net amounts between banks, and the beneficiary's bank credits the account. Your bank receives a positive confirmation once the credit is done.

RTGS: the steps look the same to the customer, but the RBI settles each instruction individually as soon as it arrives, so the money moves from one bank's account with the RBI to the other's in real time. That is why it suits large, urgent transfers.

UPI: you link your bank account to a UPI app once and create a UPI ID and PIN. To pay, you scan a QR code or enter a UPI ID, check the name shown and approve with your UPI PIN. The payment moves instantly between the two banks through NPCI, and both sides get a confirmation within seconds. A verified merchant can also send you a collect request (a "pull" payment) that you approve with your PIN. Person-to-person collect requests were stopped by NPCI from 1 October 2025 to curb fraud (circular dated 29 July 2025).

Payment Systems: Common Exam Traps

  • RTGS has a minimum (₹2 lakh) but no maximum. NEFT has neither.
  • NEFT went 24x7 in December 2019; RTGS in December 2020. Do not swap the years.
  • NEFT and RTGS are owned by the RBI; IMPS and UPI are run by NPCI.
  • NEFT is batch-based, even though it runs 24x7; RTGS is continuous.
  • "Gross" in RTGS means individual settlement, not "large amount".
