Circular Seating Arrangement Tricks: The Short Answer

The most important circular seating arrangement trick is fixing left and right correctly. When a person faces the centre, their right is anticlockwise and their left is clockwise. When a person faces outside, it flips: right is clockwise and left is anticlockwise. Get this one rule right, start from the most definite clue, and most circular puzzles fall into place.

🔥 Key Exam Takeaway: Always read "X sits to the right of Y" from Y's point of view, using Y's facing direction. In mixed-facing puzzles, two neighbours who face opposite directions are each on the same side of the other (each is on the other's right, or each is on the other's left).

Circular seating puzzles carry 5 marks almost every time in IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk, IBPS PO, SBI PO and IBPS RRB prelims, and simple versions appear in SSC CGL and CHSL. All three puzzles on this page were checked with a Python program that tried every possible seating and facing combination, so each one has exactly one solution.

Circular Seating Arrangement Rules: Left and Right

Picture the table from above. Clockwise is the direction a clock's hands move.

Facing directionRight side isLeft side is
Facing the centre (inside)AnticlockwiseClockwise
Facing outside (away from centre)ClockwiseAnticlockwise

How to remember it: stand facing the centre of a round table and raise your right hand. It points the way the clock hands move backwards (anticlockwise). Turn around to face outside and your right hand now points clockwise.

Circular seating arrangement directions in one line

"Facing centre: Right = Anti. Facing outside: Right = Clock." Write this at the top of your rough sheet before you start.

Circular Seating Arrangement Formula and Shortcuts

These are the counting rules behind most "circular seating arrangement formula" questions. Each was checked in Python.

RuleFormulaExample (8 people)
k-th to the right is the same as (n − k)-th to the leftright k = left (n − k)3rd to the right = 5th to the left
Opposite seat exists only when n is evenopposite = (n/2)-th to the left or right4th to the left or right
People between X and Yif m sit between them one way, n − 2 − m sit between them the other way2 one way means 4 the other way
Ways to seat n people in a circle(n − 1)!7! = 5040
Ways when clockwise and anticlockwise count as the same (garland, necklace)(n − 1)! ÷ 25040 ÷ 2 = 2520

Note: In a circle of 8, "two people sit between D and F" always means D and F are 3 seats apart one way and 5 seats apart the other way. Unless the clue says "when counted from the left of D" (or similar), check both sides.

Mixed Facing Circular Seating Arrangement Tricks (Facing Outside and Inside)

New-pattern IBPS and SBI puzzles often say "some face the centre and some face outside". These rules save the most time. Each was tested on every facing combination.

If two immediate neighbours A and B...Then
Both face the centreIf B is to A's right, A is to B's left
Both face outsideIf B is to A's right, A is to B's left
Face opposite directionsIf B is to A's right, A is also to B's right (same side)
A is to B's right and B is to A's rightThey face opposite directions
A is to B's left and B is to A's leftThey face opposite directions

Step-by-step method for mixed facing puzzles

  1. Fix positions first, facings later. Many clues ("X sits opposite Y", "X is a neighbour of Y") do not depend on facing. Use them first.
  2. Use the facing you know. "Q sits third to the left of P, who faces the centre" can be placed at once. "U sits to the immediate left of Q" cannot, until Q's facing is known.
  3. Test both facings when stuck. If one facing would put a person on an occupied seat, the other facing is correct. This is the usual way facings get decided.
  4. Use the count. "Four face the centre and four face outside" often settles the last facing.

How to Solve Circular Seating Arrangement Questions Quickly (Step-by-Step Trick)

  1. Draw the circle and seats. For 8 people, draw 8 dots (or a square with 4 corners and 4 side-middles). Mark the facing with a small arrow when it matters.
  2. Start with the most definite clue. A clue that names two people with an exact distance ("B sits second to the right of A") beats a negative clue ("D does not sit next to C").
  3. Anchor one person. Rotations do not matter in a circle, so put the first person anywhere.
  4. Branch only when you must. If a clue gives two possible seats, draw two small circles (Case 1 and Case 2) and keep going in both.
  5. Kill cases with negative clues. "Not a neighbour", "does not face the centre" and counts are where wrong cases die.
  6. Re-check every clue at the end. It takes 20 seconds and saves 5 marks.

Circular Seating Arrangement Questions with Solutions (Solved Puzzles)

Puzzle 1: Eight people facing the centre (IBPS Clerk style)

Eight friends A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H sit around a circular table, all facing the centre.

  • B sits second to the right of A.
  • G sits opposite B.
  • Only one person sits between G and E.
  • E is not an immediate neighbour of A.
  • C sits third to the left of E.
  • H is an immediate neighbour of G.
  • D sits to the immediate right of G.
  • D is not an immediate neighbour of C.

Solution:

  1. Put A at the top. Facing centre, right is anticlockwise, so B is 2 seats anticlockwise from A.
  2. G is opposite B (4 seats away).
  3. One person sits between G and E, so E is 2 seats from G. The seat 2 anticlockwise of G is A's, so E is 2 seats clockwise of G, directly opposite A (and not next to A, as required).
  4. C is third to the left of E. Left is clockwise, so C is 3 seats clockwise from E, which is the seat between B and A.
  5. D is to the immediate right of G (anticlockwise of G), the seat between A and G.
  6. H must be a neighbour of G, so H takes the other side of G, between G and E.
  7. F takes the last seat, between E and B. D is not next to C, which checks out.

Final arrangement (clockwise from A): A, D, G, H, E, F, B, C. All face the centre.

Quick answers: A sits opposite E. The third person to the right of H is A. Three people sit between D and F (on either side). D is second to the left of C. F is to the immediate right of B.

Puzzle 2: Mixed facing (SBI Clerk / IBPS PO style)

Eight people P, Q, R, S, T, U, V and W sit around a circular table. Four face the centre and four face outside.

  • P faces the centre. Q sits third to the left of P.
  • R sits opposite Q and faces outside.
  • S sits second to the right of R.
  • The immediate neighbours of R face opposite directions.
  • T is an immediate neighbour of both Q and S.
  • T and Q face the same direction. S faces the opposite direction to T.
  • U sits to the immediate left of Q.
  • V is an immediate neighbour of R.
  • W faces outside.

Solution:

  1. P faces the centre, so left is clockwise. Q is 3 seats clockwise from P.
  2. R is opposite Q, so R is 1 seat anticlockwise from P. R faces outside.
  3. R faces outside, so R's right is clockwise. S is 2 seats clockwise from R, which is the seat right after P.
  4. T is next to both Q and S, so T sits between them.
  5. U is to the immediate left of Q. If Q faced outside, Q's left would be anticlockwise, which is T's seat (taken). So Q faces the centre, and U is the seat just clockwise of Q.
  6. T faces the same way as Q, so T faces the centre, and S faces outside.
  7. V is a neighbour of R. R's other neighbour is P, so V sits just anticlockwise of R. W takes the last seat, between U and V.
  8. R's neighbours (P and V) face opposite directions. P faces the centre, so V faces outside. W faces outside too.
  9. Four face the centre: P, T and Q are three, so U is the fourth.

Final arrangement (clockwise from P): P (centre), S (outside), T (centre), Q (centre), U (centre), W (outside), V (outside), R (outside).

Quick answers: The second person to the right of W is R. P is to the immediate right of R (and R is to the immediate right of P, because they face opposite directions). V sits opposite T. The people facing the centre are P, Q, T and U.

Puzzle 3: Six people facing outside (SSC CGL / CHSL style)

Six people J, K, L, M, N and O sit around a circular table, all facing outside.

  • J sits second to the right of K.
  • L sits opposite J.
  • M is not an immediate neighbour of K.
  • N sits to the immediate left of L.

Solution: Facing outside, right is clockwise. Put K anywhere; J is 2 seats clockwise. L is opposite J. N is to the immediate left of L, which is anticlockwise of L. The two seats left are between K and J, and between J and N. M cannot be next to K, so M sits between J and N, and O sits between K and J.

Final arrangement (clockwise from K): K, O, J, M, N, L. All face outside.

Quick answers: K sits opposite M. O is second to the left of M. J is to the immediate right of O.

Common Mistakes in Circular Seating Arrangement Puzzles

  • Using your own left and right. Always use the left and right of the person named in the clue.
  • Forgetting to flip for facing outside. Write the facing rule at the top of your sheet.
  • Reading "between" on one side only. In a circle, there are always two sides. Check both unless the clue fixes the direction.
  • Placing facing-dependent clues too early. In mixed puzzles, place by distance and neighbour clues first.
  • Assuming "opposite" in an odd circle. With 5, 7 or 9 people, nobody sits exactly opposite.

Circular Seating Arrangement Practice Questions with Answers

Questions 1 to 9 use the three solved puzzles above.

Q1. (Puzzle 1) Who sits opposite A? Answer: E. Clockwise order is A, D, G, H, E, F, B, C; E is 4 seats from A.

Q2. (Puzzle 1) Who sits third to the right of H? Answer: A. Facing centre, right is anticlockwise: G, D, then A.

Q3. (Puzzle 1) How many people sit between D and F when counted from the right of D? Answer: Three. D and F are opposite each other, so three people sit between them on either side.

Q4. (Puzzle 1) Who sits second to the left of C? Answer: D. Left is clockwise: A, then D.

Q5. (Puzzle 2) Who sits second to the right of W? Answer: R. W faces outside, so right is clockwise: V, then R.

Q6. (Puzzle 2) Who are the four people facing the centre? Answer: P, Q, T and U.

Q7. (Puzzle 2) Who sits opposite T? Answer: V.

Q8. (Puzzle 2) R and P are neighbours. Who is to the immediate right of R? Answer: P. R faces outside, so R's right is clockwise, which is P. P faces the centre, so P's right is anticlockwise, which is R. Opposite facings put them on each other's right.

Q9. (Puzzle 3) Who sits second to the left of M? Answer: O. Facing outside, left is anticlockwise: J, then O.

Q10. Ten people sit in a circle facing the centre. X is seventh to the right of Y. In terms of Y's left, where does X sit? Answer: Third to the left of Y. Using right k = left (n − k): 10 − 7 = 3.

Circular Seating Arrangement FAQs

How do you find left and right in circular seating arrangement?

Facing the centre, right is anticlockwise and left is clockwise. Facing outside, right is clockwise and left is anticlockwise. Always use the facing of the person named in the clue.

What is the formula for circular seating arrangement?

n people can sit around a circular table in (n − 1)! ways. When clockwise and anticlockwise orders count as the same (as in a garland), it is (n − 1)! ÷ 2.

How do you solve circular seating arrangement with people facing outside and inside?

Place people using clues that do not need facing (opposite, neighbour, distance from someone whose facing you know). Then decide facings by testing both options; the wrong one usually puts someone on a taken seat or breaks a count.

What does "facing opposite directions" mean in circular seating?

One person faces the centre and the other faces outside. Two neighbours facing opposite directions sit on the same side of each other: both are on each other's right or both on each other's left.

Is k-th to the right the same as (n − k)-th to the left?

Yes, in a circle of n people with the same facing, the k-th person to the right is also the (n − k)-th person to the left.

How many questions come from circular seating in bank exams?

Usually one puzzle with 5 questions in IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk, IBPS PO and SBI PO prelims, though some shifts use a linear or box puzzle instead.
