- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. On the terraces of apartment blocks in a crowded city, residents are growing tomatoes, spinach and chillies in old paint buckets and grow bags. What began as a hobby during long weeks at home has turned into a small movement, with neighbourhood groups exchanging seeds, compost and advice. Urban farming will not feed a city. The space available is too small, and most residents still buy nearly all their food. But its benefits lie elsewhere. A terrace garden cools the floor below, absorbs some rainwater and gives kitchen waste a use as compost. For families, it offers fresh produce free of the doubts that surround pesticide use in some markets. There are social gains too. Retired residents who might otherwise spend days alone find a reason to meet, and children learn where food comes from. Some housing societies have turned unused corners into shared plots, with each family responsible for a bed. The movement faces practical limits. Not all buildings can bear the weight of soil and water, and leaks can damage roofs if beds are poorly built. City authorities could help by offering guidance on safe designs and by allowing community gardens on public land that now lies empty.
