- Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below. When the city museum announced that it would photograph and publish online every object in its storerooms, many curators were uneasy. For more than a century, the museum had displayed barely a tenth of its collection; the rest lay in wooden cabinets, catalogued on index cards that only a handful of staff could read. Opening this hidden collection to the public, the director argued, would turn the museum from a building people visited once into a resource they could return to every day. The first year of the project was slower than anyone had expected. Each object had to be cleaned, measured and photographed from several angles, and many of the old index cards contained errors. A bronze lamp, for instance, had been recorded as Roman for decades; a visiting scholar who saw its photograph online pointed out that it was a nineteenth-century copy. Rather than hiding such mistakes, the museum began to publish its corrections alongside the original records, explaining how each error had been discovered. This openness had an unexpected effect. Schoolteachers started building lessons around the online records, asking students to compare objects from different centuries. Families who had donated items generations earlier wrote in with letters and photographs that added personal histories to the catalogue. Visits to the physical galleries, which some critics had predicted would fall, actually rose by nearly a fifth, as people came to see objects they had first discovered on their screens. Not every concern has disappeared. High-resolution images are expensive to store, and the museum must now decide which objects deserve detailed three-dimensional scans and which can be recorded with a single photograph. Some curators also worry that a screen can never convey the weight, texture or scale of a real object. Yet even the sceptics admit that the project has changed the relationship between the museum and its public: visitors no longer simply look at what experts have chosen to show; they help to decide what the collection means.
