- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. A fort that stood empty for decades is now one of the busiest places in its district. After the state restored its walls, cleaned its stepwells and opened a small museum, visitors began to arrive, and with them came guides, food stalls and homestays run by local families. Heritage, long seen as a cost to be maintained, had become a source of livelihood. Such revivals depend on a careful balance. Too few visitors and the site cannot pay for its upkeep; too many and the crowds wear down the very stones they came to see. Some sites now limit daily entries, charge higher fees at peak times or guide visitors along fixed paths to protect fragile areas. The involvement of local people is equally important. Where residents are trained as guides and earn from tourism, they become the first defenders of the site, discouraging vandalism and reporting damage. Where tourism is run entirely by outsiders, residents may see visitors only as a nuisance. Finally, a monument tells its story best when it is understood. Clear signboards, short audio guides and simple accounts of the people who built and lived in a place turn a pile of old stones into a lesson in history. A visitor who leaves knowing why the fort mattered is more likely to care whether it survives.
