- Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below. For most of the twentieth century, a broken mobile phone, a cracked television screen or a faulty washing machine had one obvious fate: it went to the local repair shop. As products became cheaper and more complex, that habit faded. Manufacturers began to glue batteries in place, use special screws and refuse to sell spare parts to independent mechanics. Repairing a device often cost almost as much as buying a new one, and so millions of working parts ended up in landfills. A growing 'right to repair' movement wants to reverse this trend. Its supporters argue that a person who buys a product should be able to fix it, or have it fixed by anyone they choose, without being forced back to the original seller. They ask for three things: that spare parts be sold at fair prices for a reasonable number of years, that repair manuals be made public, and that products be designed so that common parts such as batteries and screens can be replaced with ordinary tools. Several governments have begun to listen. Some countries now require makers of household appliances to keep spare parts available for up to ten years after a model is discontinued. Others have introduced a repairability score, printed on the box, so that buyers can compare how easy different products are to fix. In India, the government has launched a portal that brings together repair information from companies in sectors such as mobile phones, consumer durables and automobiles. Manufacturers have raised objections. They warn that untrained repairers may damage products or compromise safety, especially in devices with powerful batteries, and that publishing detailed designs could help counterfeiters. Some also point out that making every part removable can add weight and cost. Critics reply that these concerns, while not baseless, are often used to protect the profitable business of selling new products and authorised repairs. The debate is not only about money. Electronic waste is among the fastest-growing kinds of waste in the world, and much of it contains metals that are hard to recover. Every device that is repaired instead of replaced delays that waste and saves the energy needed to make a new one.
