  1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. A modern smartphone contains chips designed in one country, made in a second from silicon wafers produced in a third, and packaged and tested in a fourth. For years this scattered chain was praised as a triumph of efficiency: each step happened wherever it was cheapest and most skilled. The pandemic exposed its fragility. When a handful of factories shut or a ship was stuck, car plants on other continents idled for want of a part that costs less than a cup of tea. Governments drew a sharp conclusion: a country that cannot make chips is exposed. Large subsidies followed. The United States, the European Union, Japan and India have each announced packages to attract fabrication plants, which can cost several billion dollars apiece and take years to build. India's approach has leaned first on assembly, testing and packaging units, which need less capital, while courting a smaller number of fabrication projects. Sceptics warn that money alone cannot buy an industry. A fabrication plant needs uninterrupted power, ultra-pure water in vast quantities, a dense network of suppliers of gases and chemicals, and thousands of engineers trained in processes that change every few years. Countries that lack this ecosystem risk building expensive halls that run below capacity. Supporters reply that every leading chip nation once started from nothing, and that the cost of waiting may be higher than the cost of trying. What both camps accept is that self-sufficiency in the strict sense is out of reach for anyone. Even the most advanced producers depend on foreign machines and materials. The realistic goal is resilience: enough capacity at home, and enough trusted partners abroad, that a single shock can no longer bring production to a halt.

Q1.What does the example of the smartphone in the first paragraph illustrate?

    • A.That chip production is spread across several countries in a single chain
    • B.That chips are the cheapest part of a phone
    • C.That smartphones caused the pandemic shortages
    • D.That most chips are made from imported plastic
    • E.That smartphones are made entirely in one factory
  2. Q2.According to the passage, what did the pandemic reveal about the chip supply chain?

    • A.It was far too expensive to maintain
    • B.It produced more chips than the world needed
    • C.It depended only on Indian factories
    • D.Its efficiency came with fragility, so small disruptions stopped distant factories
    • E.It was controlled entirely by car companies
  3. Q3.Why has India started with assembly, testing and packaging units, as per the passage?

    • A.They need less capital than fabrication plants
    • B.They do not use electricity
    • C.They need no engineers at all
    • D.They are the only units allowed by global rules
    • E.They produce the most advanced chips

Start the test to answer these. Correct answers and explanations are shown after you submit.
