SBI PO Interview Questions 2026: Quick Answer
The SBI PO interview 2026 starts from 18 November 2026 (tentative), together with the Group Exercise, and the panel asks about your biodata, why SBI, banking basics, the economy and branch situations. SBI does not publish a question list, so this page gives the most likely question areas with original model answers written by BookOfExams and a simple structure you can adapt to your own profile.
Key facts (official, as of 31 Oct 2026): Psychometric test 31.10.2026; Group Exercise and Interviews from 18.11.2026 onwards; Interview 30 marks + Group Exercise 20 marks = 50 marks, normalised to 25 out of 100 in the final merit list. The minimum qualifying marks for GE and Interview are decided by the Bank.
Official sources: SBI notice: tentative dates for Psychometric Test, Group Exercise and Interviews (PDF) and the SBI PO 2026 detailed advertisement CRPD/PO/2026-27/09 (PDF), Section 8 (Phase-III and Final Selection) and Section 12. This note covers only the interview. For the group task, read our SBI PO group exercise topics 2026; for the personality test, read SBI PO psychometric test 2026.
SBI PO Interview 2026 Dates, Marks and Stages
| Phase III item | What SBI says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Psychometric test | 31.10.2026 (tentative) | SBI notice |
| Group Exercise and Interviews | From 18.11.2026 onwards (tentative) | SBI notice |
| Call letters | "Will be released shortly", with exact date and time | SBI notice, para 2 |
| Interview marks | 30 | Advertisement, Section 8 |
| Group Exercise marks | 20 | Advertisement, Section 8 |
| Weight in final merit | Mains 230 marks → 75; GE + Interview 50 marks → 25 | Advertisement, Section 8 |
| Psychometric findings | Placed before the interview panel | Advertisement, Section 8 |
Two points from the advertisement shape how you should prepare:
- The panel sees your psychometric profile. If your test answers show a calm, team-minded person, your interview replies should sound the same. Don't put on a different personality on the day.
- You must qualify Phase II and Phase III separately. A high Mains score does not carry a weak interview. Prelims marks are not added to the final merit at all.
How the SBI PO Interview Panel Works
SBI's advertisement fixes the marks but not the panel size, length or format, so treat any claim about "15 minutes" or "five members" as unofficial. What you can prepare for is the kind of question. In bank officer interviews the questions usually fall into five groups:
| Question area | What the panel is checking | Share of your preparation |
|---|---|---|
| You and your biodata | Honesty, clarity, self-awareness | High |
| Why SBI, why banking | Motivation and research | High |
| Banking and economy basics | Can you explain terms simply? | Medium |
| Branch situations | Judgement, ethics, customer handling | Medium |
| Current affairs and your subject | Awareness and depth | Medium |
The "share of preparation" column is our suggestion, not an SBI rule.
"Tell Me About Yourself": SBI PO Model Answer
Keep it to about 60-90 seconds in four parts: who you are → what you studied or did → one proof of a strength → why you want to be an SBI PO.
Model answer (adapt it, don't memorise it):
"I'm Ritika, from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. I completed my B.Sc. in Mathematics in 2024 and spent the last year preparing for bank exams while teaching maths to Class 10 students in my area. Teaching taught me to explain a difficult idea in three or four simple steps, and to stay patient when someone takes longer to understand. That is exactly what a branch officer does when a customer is confused about a loan or a new digital service. I want to join SBI as a Probationary Officer because it gives me the chance to work with people from every background and grow into a leadership role in the country's largest bank."
Why it works: a real place, a real activity, a skill linked to the job, and a clear goal. Avoid listing your marks line by line; the panel already has your biodata.
Why SBI and Why Banking: Model Answers
Q. Why do you want to join SBI and not another bank?
"Three things. First, SBI's reach: a PO here may serve in a metro branch one year and a rural branch the next, and I want that range of experience. Second, the training and career path: SBI's advertisement describes structured training and a promotion policy that lets officers move towards top management. Third, the role in public schemes: SBI is often the bank through which government benefits and financial-inclusion schemes reach people, and I'd like to be part of that work."
Q. Why banking after engineering / science / arts?
"My degree trained me to work with numbers and logic. Banking uses the same skills, credit appraisal, risk and data, but with direct contact with people every day. I prefer a job where analysis leads to a decision that helps a customer, and a PO role offers that early in a career."
Avoid: "for job security" as your only reason, or criticising other banks.
SBI PO Biodata and Gap-Year Questions
These come straight from your form, so prepare them first.
| Likely question | How to answer |
|---|---|
| Explain the gap after graduation | State it plainly ("I prepared full-time for bank exams"), then show what you did with the time: a skill, a course, tutoring, family business. |
| Why did you leave your last job? | Positive and forward-looking: "I wanted a role with more customer contact and long-term growth." Never blame the employer. |
| What does your name / hometown stand for? | One or two facts about your district: main crops or industry, a well-known place, banking access there. |
| Hobbies | Only list hobbies you can discuss for two minutes. If you write "reading", name the last book. |
| Your graduation subject | Revise five core topics from your degree; panels often test engineers and science graduates on basics. |
Model answer: gap year
"After graduating in 2023, I prepared full-time for banking exams. I cleared one Prelims in 2024 but missed the Mains cut-off, so I changed my approach: I started timed mocks and wrote one descriptive answer every day. During this period I also completed an online course in basic accounting. The gap taught me to accept a setback and plan better, which I think will help me under targets in a branch."
Banking Basics Questions for SBI PO Interview
The panel wants simple explanations, not textbook definitions. Use a one-line meaning plus a one-line example.
| Question | Model one-line answer |
|---|---|
| What is the repo rate? | The rate at which RBI lends short-term money to banks; when it rises, loans usually become costlier. (Check RBI's latest policy decision before your date; see our repo rate history.) |
| CRR vs SLR? | CRR is cash a bank keeps with RBI; SLR is the share of deposits a bank holds in liquid assets like government securities. (CRR and SLR rate 2026) |
| What is an NPA? | A loan whose interest or principal stays overdue beyond the norm RBI sets (generally 90 days for term loans). (NPA classification norms) |
| What is IBC? | The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, a time-bound law to resolve stressed companies and help creditors recover dues. |
| Why is KYC important? | It confirms who the customer is and helps stop fraud and money laundering. |
Model answer: "How would you explain NPA to a farmer?"
"I would say: if you take a loan and do not pay any instalment or interest for about three months, the bank has to treat that loan as a problem loan. It then cannot earn on that money and must keep aside extra funds for it. That is why we try to help early, for example by restructuring, before the loan reaches that stage."
Economy and RBI Questions in the SBI PO Interview
Expect one or two questions on the economy, usually linked to the news. Prepare these:
- Who decides interest rates in India, and how often does the Monetary Policy Committee meet?
- What is inflation targeting? (RBI's monetary policy tools note covers the basics.)
- What did the latest RBI policy announce? (Read the RBI statement itself; our RBI monetary policy October 2026 highlights summarises it.)
- How does UPI help small businesses, and what risks come with it?
Rule for numbers: quote a figure only if you have read it in an official release (RBI, PIB, Finance Ministry). Saying "I would like to check the exact figure" is better than a wrong number.
Branch Situation Questions with Model Answers
These test judgement. Use a simple order: customer first → rules followed → escalate if needed → learn from it.
Q. A regular customer asks you to open an account for his relative without full KYC because "you know the family". What will you do?
"I would politely say I can't open the account without the required documents, because KYC rules protect both the customer and the bank. I would tell him exactly which documents are missing, offer to keep the form ready, and open the account the same day they bring them. That keeps the relationship and the rules intact."
Q. Your branch has a deposit target and you are behind with ten days left.
"I'd first look at our own data: customers whose fixed deposits are maturing, salary accounts with high balances, and nearby businesses we haven't contacted. Then I'd plan daily calls and visits with my team and track progress every evening. I would not push a product that doesn't suit the customer, because a forced sale damages trust."
Q. A senior citizen is upset after losing money to an online fraud.
"I'd sit with her, stay calm, and act quickly: block the card or account access, help her report the fraud through the bank's channel and the cyber-crime helpline, and note every detail. Then I'd explain simple safety steps so it doesn't happen again."
SBI PO Interview Questions on Job Terms (Official Facts)
Panels often check whether you have read the advertisement. Know these, all from the SBI PO 2026 advertisement:
| Question | Official fact |
|---|---|
| Are you ready to be posted anywhere? | "The selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India." |
| Do you know about the bond? | A bond of Rs 2 lakh to serve the Bank for at least three years. |
| How long is probation? | May be two years, with continuous assessment. |
| What is the starting basic? | Rs 48,480 with 4 advance increments, JMGS-I scale; see SBI PO salary 2026. |
| Will SBI pay travel for the interview? | Outstation candidates get Railway AC-III fare by the shortest route, or actual expense, whichever is lower; no local transport. |
The advertisement also says candidates must give details of any pending criminal case at the time of interview, and that EWS and OBC certificates must meet the dates SBI specifies at document verification. Check your eligibility papers against our SBI PO eligibility and age limit 2026 note.
Mistakes That Cost Marks in the SBI PO Interview
- A memorised self-introduction that sounds recited. Panels interrupt and the script falls apart.
- Wrong facts. One confident wrong figure hurts more than "I'm not sure."
- Mismatch with the psychometric test. Claiming to love fieldwork after describing yourself as a desk person in the test.
- Badmouthing a former employer, college or another bank.
- No questions about the job. If asked "Do you have a question for us?", a short, sincere one about training or the first posting is fine.
7-Day SBI PO Interview Preparation Plan

| 4 | Latest RBI policy and two weeks of business news from official releases |

| 6 | Your graduation subject and home district |
