IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2026: Quick Answer
As per the official IBPS CRP PO/MT-XVI notification (30.06.2026), the IBPS PO exam has three stages: an online Prelims of 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes, an online Mains of 170 objective questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes plus a 25-mark descriptive paper in 30 minutes, and then a compulsory personality test followed by a 100-mark interview. The final merit is Mains : Interview = 80 : 20; Prelims marks are not counted.
Key takeaway: In 2026 the Prelims marks are no longer one per question. English has 30 questions for 30 marks, Quantitative Aptitude 35 questions for 30 marks and Reasoning 35 questions for 40 marks, as printed in the notification. You must also clear the cut-off in each Prelims section.

Marks per question in IBPS PO Prelims 2026
Because marks and questions differ by section, each question is worth a different amount:
| Section | Marks per question | Penalty per wrong answer (1/4 of question's marks) |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 ÷ 30 = 1 | 0.25 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 ÷ 35 ≈ 0.857 | ≈ 0.214 |
| Reasoning Ability | 40 ÷ 35 ≈ 1.143 | ≈ 0.286 |
These per-question values are our arithmetic from the official section marks; the notification states the section totals and the one-fourth penalty rule.

How the IBPS PO final score is worked out
The notification gives the 80:20 ratio. Here is an illustration of how that ratio applies (our example, not an IBPS formula with fixed numbers):
- Mains score 120 out of 225 (200 objective + 25 descriptive) → 120 ÷ 225 × 80 ≈ 42.67
- Interview score 60 out of 100 → 60 ÷ 100 × 20 = 12
- Combined ≈ 54.67 out of 100
IBPS computes the combined final score from the Mains and interview scores of CRP PO/MT-XVI; the exact normalisation is IBPS's.
IBPS PO Negative Marking 2026 (Section E)
For each wrong answer in the objective tests of both Prelims and Mains, one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. A question left blank carries no penalty.

How to Prepare for the New IBPS PO Pattern
- Lean towards Reasoning in Prelims. Each Reasoning question is worth more than a Quant question (about 1.14 against 0.86), so a strong Reasoning score lifts your total more.
- Do not neglect any section. Prelims has a cut-off in every section; one weak section can end your attempt.
- Practise DA&I and Reasoning for Mains. Together they carry 120 of the 200 objective marks.
- Treat English in Mains as low-marks but time-bound. 40 questions carry only 20 marks, so do not over-spend time there.
- Write one essay a week. The descriptive paper is typed and may be machine-scored for writing quality.
