- The world's oceans are a complex network of currents, largely driven by wind, temperature, and salinity gradients. Among these, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a crucial role in regulating global climate by transporting warm surface waters from the tropics to the North Atlantic. However, recent studies indicate a significant weakening of the AMOC, largely attributed to climate change. The rapid melting of the Greenland ice sheet releases vast amounts of freshwater into the ocean, disrupting the delicate salinity balance required for the circulation process. If this trend continues, Europe could experience much colder winters, while tropical monsoons, vital for agriculture in regions like South Asia, might face severe disruptions. The potential collapse of the AMOC serves as a stark reminder of the fragile interconnectedness of Earth's climate systems.
Q1.What is the primary function of the AMOC as mentioned in the passage?
- A.Regulating global climate by transporting cold water to the tropics
- B.Regulating global climate by transporting warm surface waters to the North Atlantic
- C.Melting the Greenland ice sheet to maintain salinity
- D.Controlling the wind patterns across the Atlantic Ocean
Q2.What is the main cause of the weakening of the AMOC?
- A.Decreased wind speeds in the North Atlantic
- B.Increased salinity in the tropical waters
- C.The influx of freshwater from the melting Greenland ice sheet
- D.The disruption of tropical monsoons in South Asia
Q3.According to the passage, what might be a consequence of the continued weakening of the AMOC?
- A.Warmer winters in Europe
- B.More predictable and stable tropical monsoons
- C.Disruption of vital agricultural patterns in South Asia
- D.An immediate halt to all ocean currents globally
Start the test to answer these. Correct answers and explanations are shown after you submit.
