- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. In many Indian cities the bus is the backbone of public transport, carrying more passengers each day than metro systems that cost many times more to build. Yet bus fleets have often failed to keep pace with growing populations. Commuters wait long at crowded stops, buses crawl through traffic, and those who can afford it switch to two-wheelers and cars, adding to the congestion. Electric buses offer a cleaner alternative, and several cities have begun to add them in large numbers. Their running costs are lower than those of diesel buses, and they cut local air pollution and noise. Their high purchase price, however, has led many cities to lease them from private operators who are paid per kilometre, leaving the city to set routes and fares. Clean buses alone will not win back passengers. What matters most to commuters is how often a bus comes and how long the journey takes. Dedicated lanes, priority at signals and reliable timetables shown on phones can make the bus competitive with private vehicles. Without them, even the newest bus is stuck in the same traffic as everyone else. The bus also needs a better reputation. Clean, safe and well-lit stops, courteous staff and easy digital ticketing can change how people see it, from the vehicle of last resort to a sensible choice for everyone.
