- Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow. Millets were once the staple grains of large parts of rural India. Crops such as jowar, bajra and ragi grow well on poor soils, need far less water than rice or wheat, and can survive long dry spells. During the Green Revolution, however, government support went mainly to rice and wheat, and millets slowly disappeared from many farms and kitchens. In recent years nutrition experts have pointed out that millets are rich in fibre, iron and calcium, and release sugar into the blood slowly. Farmers in drought-prone districts have also rediscovered that a millet crop rarely fails completely. The challenge now is to make millets convenient for city families, who are used to polished rice and refined flour. Ready-to-cook millet products, school meal schemes and better prices for growers could together bring these hardy grains back to the Indian plate.
