- Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given after it. When a small town library in Kerala began lending tablets along with books, some members worried that it was abandoning its purpose. A decade later, the library is busier than ever. Students come to use the internet for scholarship applications, retired teachers run reading circles for children, and farmers check market prices on a shared computer before deciding when to sell. The story is not unusual. Around the world, public libraries that were expected to fade in the age of search engines have instead reinvented themselves as community spaces. Their value lies not only in the information they hold, most of which can now be found online, but in the help they offer in finding, judging and using it. A librarian who can show a first-generation learner how to tell a reliable website from a misleading one provides something that a search box cannot. This new role demands new skills. Librarians must be comfortable with technology, but also with people of very different ages and needs. It also demands money, and here libraries are vulnerable. Because their benefits are spread widely and are hard to measure, they are often among the first services to be cut when budgets are tight. Defenders of libraries argue that they should be judged less by the number of books issued and more by what happens in them: the job applications completed, the children who learn to read for pleasure, the older people who find company. Such measures are harder to count, but they come closer to the reason libraries exist.
Q1.Why did some members worry when the Kerala library began lending tablets?
- A.They believed children would stop coming.
- B.They wanted the library to lend only computers.
- C.They feared the library would close at once.
- D.They felt the library was moving away from its original purpose.
- E.They thought tablets were too expensive to lend.
Q2.According to the passage, the special value of a librarian today lies in:
- A.owning information not available online
- B.helping people find, judge and use information
- C.repairing computers and tablets
- D.issuing a larger number of books
- E.running scholarship schemes
Q3.Why are libraries described as 'vulnerable'?
- A.Their widely spread, hard-to-measure benefits make them easy targets for budget cuts.
- B.Their buildings are old and unsafe.
- C.Nobody uses libraries any more.
- D.They depend on search engines for money.
- E.Librarians lack technical skills.
