The Global Ocean Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, brought together delegates from 72 countries to confront the alarming rise in ocean pollution. The meeting stressed how urgently marine ecosystems need protection and placed before the world facts that demanded immediate action. One of the leading voices was Dr. Samuel Okafor, a marine biologist from Lagos, who presented years of research on the destruction of coral reefs. He showed that untreated sewage and growing volumes of industrial waste have caused large-scale bleaching of reefs and the disappearance of several marine species. A healthy reef, he argued, is essential for keeping the balance of marine life and for sustaining the 'deep' links between ocean species. The Japanese scientist Dr. Haruto Mori called for a sharp worldwide cut in the use of plastic. His data showed that microplastics, which come from single-use packaging and industrial debris, are entering the marine food chain and finally reaching human diets. He backed the global call to phase out single-use plastics and replace them with biodegradable materials, saying this 'approach' was vital for the health of both sea life and people. Dr. Claire Benson, a researcher from Australia, spoke about oil spills and chemical waste, explaining how they have disturbed the breeding of many marine species and poisoned important stretches of ocean. The figures shared at the summit were striking. More than eight million tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans every year. Microplastics have been found in over eighty per cent of the marine species studied, and the health of coral reefs worldwide has declined by about forty per cent because of pollution and warmer seas. Delegates agreed on the need to adopt biodegradable alternatives, enforce stricter rules on industrial waste and promote renewable energy to reduce contamination. From Mumbai to Oslo, leaders pledged to face the challenge together and to protect the seas through ________ and sustained effort. The summit closed with a promise of new research and global awareness campaigns.
